Or 24 the southern extremity of Florida, to N. Lat. 54 the extreme north of the district of Oregon; and from the 67th to the 125th degree of west longitude from Greenwich: It was bounded on the north by British America; on the west by the Pacific Ocean to the 42nd degree of latitude; on the south by the republic of Mexico (such as it was originally, after it became independent of Spain) and the Mexican Gulf, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. This might well be called an immense region. Its mean length from east to west was 2,500'miles, and its mean breadth from north to south 830. Its line of boundary extended, according to Darby, to miles, of which were sea-coast; and its area comprehended square miles, exceeding by a small fraction one-twentieth part of the land surface of the earth.
