Book Description
Excerpt from The Hill Difficulty IN a great forest, when Spring, Summer, and Autumn have renewed and finished their work, the leaves that fall off are never lost, but still have many uses. They may pass, though trodden under foot, into the life of brighter and fresher leaves, although they possess Within them no power to reproduce a tree. Thus our thoughts, aban domed to the World, may do some good, provided a good nature is in them, and not the depravity and death of our moral nature, even though they may seem to have no great active power, except merely to weave a part of the common mould Where mind is nourished. Still, if of a pure moral tendency, they may have a good share of influ ence in producing another fresh and vigorous foliage. On this ground, any right-minded Pilgrim through our World may be pardoned for the publication of a Book of Leaves. If they are only leaves, so they be pure leaves, they can do no harm. If efficacious seeds are found within them and among them, although these he not of much note at present, yet possibly they may grow the better and more surely for not being noticed, in some minds on which the leaves have fallen. Book Description
Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book Description
Excerpt from Pleasant Hill IN this book it has been my purpose to tell the story of the old Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, located between Girard and Virden, Illinois. After three years of research I present to you the picture contained herein. The difficulties have been numerous and I ask your leniency if I have erred in reconstructing these events so nearly lost to posterity. As many interesting details have been omitted as have been used. I ask your pardon if your story has not been included. All names, dates, and events are facts. No doubt inaccuracies have crept in, but little of the book is pure conjecture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
David Plante's dazzling portraits of three influential women in the literary world, now back in print for the first time in decades. Difficult Women presents portraits of three extraordinary, complicated, and, yes, difficult women, while also raising intriguing and, in their own way, difficult questions about the character and motivations of the keenly and often cruelly observant portraitist himself. The book begins with David Plante’s portrait of Jean Rhys in her old age, when the publication of The Wide Sargasso Sea, after years of silence that had made Rhys’s great novels of the 1920s and ’30s as good as unknown, had at last gained genuine recognition for her. Rhys, however, can hardly be said to be enjoying her new fame. A terminal alcoholic, she curses and staggers and rants like King Lear on the heath in the hotel room that she has made her home, while Plante looks impassively on. Sonia Orwell is his second subject, a suave exploiter and hapless victim of her beauty and social prowess, while the unflappable, brilliant, and impossibly opinionated Germaine Greer sails through the final pages, ever ready to set the world, and any erring companion, right.
