Book Description
As a young man with an adventurous spirit and not much else, I had the opportunity to start a business in Swatow, on the south China coast. That bustling city is not on the map anymore; the name has been changed to Shantou. The late 1930s was not exactly the perfect time to start this enterprise. The Japanese were moving down along the China coast after their Manchurian takeover, and war was looming in Europe. Obviously, there was a notable lack of recreational opportunities for a lonesome Westerner. Having little else to do with my spare time, one day I wandered into an antique shop and browsed. My eye was caught by a blue-and-white porcelain plate and bowl. The owner identified them as 16th century "Swatow" ware. These were not Imperial porcelains by any means, but I liked them and bought them. That was the way it so innocently started.--S. Herzman

Book Description
Among the most revered and beloved artworks in China are ceramics—sculptures and vessels that have been utilized to embellish tombs, homes, and studies, to drink tea and wine, and to convey social and cultural meanings such as good wishes and religious beliefs. Since the eighth century, Chinese ceramics, particularly porcelain, have played an influential role around the world as trade introduced their beauty and surpassing craft to countless artists in Europe, America, and elsewhere. Spanning five millennia, the Metropolitan Museum’s collection of Chinese ceramics represents a great diversity of materials, shapes, and subjects. The remarkable selections presented in this volume, which include both familiar examples and unusual ones, will acquaint readers with the prodigious accomplishments of Chinese ceramicists from Neolithic times to the modern era. As with previous books in the How to Read series, How to Read Chinese Ceramics elucidates the works to encourage deeper understanding and appreciation of the meaning of individual pieces and the culture in which they were created. From exquisite jars, bowls, bottles, and dishes to the elegantly sculpted Chan Patriarch Bodhidharma and the gorgeous Vase with Flowers of the Four Seasons, How to Read Chinese Ceramics is a captivating introduction to one of the greatest artistic traditions in Asian culture.

Book Description
Chinese ceramics from Chicago Collections developed from a desire to explore the vast porcelain and pottery holdings of both public and private Chicago-area collections. Of primary interest were ceramic works that had not been previously published or exhibited. The need to further focus the exhibition provided an additional constraint; it was decided that useful wares--bowls, plates, ewers, vases, incense burners and other objects that were utilitarian in nature--would be sought. With the criteria established, hundreds of vessels were examined and studies, resulting in a final selection of eighty-seven works that demonstrate the richness and beauty of Chinese ceramics and the variety of shapes, glazes and decorations from the Neolithic period through the early twentieth century.--Foreword.
