Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ... City Road Chapel Opened Sunday, November 1, was the day appointed for opening the new chapel in the City-road. It is perfectly neat, but not fine; and contains far more people than the Foundery: I believe, together with the morning chapeL as many as the Tabernacle. Many were afraid that the multitudes, crowding from all parts, would have occasioned much disturbance. But they were happily disappointed: there was none at all: all was quietness decency, and order. I preached on part of Solomon's Prayer at the Dedication of the Temple; and both in the' morning and afternoon (when I preached on the hundred forty and four thousand standing with the Lamb on Mount Zion), God was eminently present in the midst of the congregation. Mon. 2.--I went to Chatham, and preached in the evening to a lively, loving congregation. Tuesday, 3. I went by water to Sheerness. Our room being far too small for the people that attended, I sent to the Governor to desire (what had been allowed me before) the use of the chapel. He refused me (uncivilly enough), affecting to doubt whether I was in orders 1 So I preached to as many as it would contain in our own room. Wed. 4.--I took a view of the old church at Minster, once a spacious and elegant building. It stands pleasantly on the top of a hill, and commands all the country round. We went from thence to Queensborough, which contains above fifty houses, and sends two members to Parliament. Surely the whole Isle of Sheppey is now but a shadow of what it was once. Thur. 5.--I returned to Chatham, and the following morning set out on the stage-coach for London. At the end of Stroud, I chose to walk up the hill, leaving the Mar. 1779 WALKING AND SLEEPING 421 coach to follow me. But it was in no great haste: it did not...

Book Description
The Journal kept by John Wesley from 1735 to 1790 charts his own spiritual journey and the work in which he engaged once converted. These extracts provide an insight into the spiritual ignorance and hostility that existed in his day and the amazing effects of the Gospel in transforming lives. We see the revival that took place as a result of his and others’ evangelistic endeavours and the establishment of Methodism. Wesley’s incessant travels, – covering thousands of miles each year, often on horseback, and habitually preaching several times a day, – make compelling reading. They challenge us too. What efforts are we making to reach the lost in our day, in which ignorance and hostility to spiritual things still exists?

Book Description
Each individual Defining Moments ebook is a fascinating look at the remarkable ways in which God has used an ordinary person to change history. But it is about more than history alone—it illuminates the present and unveils the future. Prophetic in nature, it reveals how God wants to work in each of our lives to fulfill His purposes—today, tomorrow, and in the years to come. The stories in the Defining Moments collection of God-encounters carry a prophetic anointing for all who have ears to hear. Author Bill Johnson highlights the significant traits and contributions of many well-known revival leaders, including John Wesley, Charles Finney, Dwight L. Moody, Maria Woodworth-Etter, Carrie Judd Montgomery, Smith Wigglesworth, John G. Lake, Evan Roberts, Rees Howells, Aimee Semple McPherson, Kathryn Kuhlman, Randy Clark, and Heidi Baker. He explains the impact these leaders can have on us today as we respond to the life-changing truths revealed through their life stories. There is power in knowing the testimonies of men and women who experienced God in a defining moment and said yes to His unique call on their lives. It is a power that inspires us to hunger for God in such a way that we, too, will have an encounter with Him that launches us into the world of the “impossible,” enabling us to fulfill a greater measure of our destiny. Read this ebook with a sense of readiness, and watch what happens.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Heart of John Wesley's Journal: With an Introduction by Hugh Price Hughes, M. A As Lord Hugh Cecil has recently said in a memorable Speech, the Religious Question cannot be ignored. It is the Question; in the deepest sense it is the only Question. It has always determined the course of history everywhere. In all ages the sceptical literary class has tried to ignore it, as the Roman historians, poets, and philosophers ignored Christianity until the time when Christianity became triumphant and dominant throughout the Roman Empire. Book Description
Most people who care about nature cannot help but use religious language to describe their experience. We can trace many of these conceptions of nature and holiness directly to influential nineteenth-century writers, especially Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862). In Walden, he writes that "God himself culminates in the present moment," and that in nature we encounter, "the workman whose work we are." But what were the sources of his religious convictions about the meaning of nature in human life?
