Book Description
Yunnan Province, China, 1943... Two men wage an intellectual war over a timeworn chessboard, a metaphor for the conflict that rages in the skies above. The young, handsome Army pilot seethes against the violent forces of a hostile world, angry that his bombs and bullets cannot vanquish the enemy who threatens all his values. His opponent, the older, world-wise man of the cloth dispatched long ago to this dreary, distant outpost, offers divine guidance: "You can't force the hand of God." Such advice is wasted on Major Rodger Brown, who has never been one to simply accept fate--not since the terrible night of his childhood when another evil penetrated his world, forcing a good man to flee for his life. A helpless boy then, Rodger grew to be a man who vowed to change the course of injustice--even if it meant using the lethal power he learned to wield both above the clouds and in the boxing ring.

Book Description
Are we hapless victims of life's whims? Are we driven along by some blind and impersonal force? Are we battered by circumstances beyond all control? A thousand times, "No!" says pastor and author Alistair Begg. Instead, Begg says we are the objects of God's providential care. We reside under His guiding and protecting hand. In this richly textured study of Joseph's life, readers will see God at work shaping Joseph's circumstances so that he can ultimately redeem and reconcile his family. And they'll see the hand of God in their own lives, lovingly guiding them through their disappointments and struggles to a place of peace. It's an amazing and comforting fact: God rules and overrules in the circumstances of life. God's authority is neither capricious nor vindictive—quite the contrary—God works through the circumstances of life to bring about something miraculous, something abundantly good, even out of what we perceive to be our darkest moments. We can entrust the baggage of our past, the fears of our present, and the prospects of our future to the God who cares.

Book Description
The question of divine agency in the world remains one important unresolved underlying obstacle in the dialogue between theology and science. Modern notions of divine agency are shown to have developed out of the interaction of three factors in early modernity. Two are well known: late medieval perfect-being theology and the early modern application of the notion of the two books of God's revelation to the understanding of the natural order. It is argued the third is the early modern appropriation of theAugustinian doctrine of inspiration. This assumes the soul's existence and a particular description of divine agency in humans, which became more generally applied to divine agency in nature. Whereas Newton explicitly draws the parallel between divine agency in humans and that in nature, Darwin rejects its supposed perfection and Huxley raises serious questions regarding the traditional understanding of the soul. This book offers an alternative incarnational description of divine agency, freeing consideration of divine agency from being dependent on resolving the complex issues of perfect-being theology and the existence of the soul. In conversation with Barth's pneumatology, this proposal is shown to remain theologically coherent and plausible while resolving or avoiding a range of known difficulties in the science-theology dialogue.

Excerpt from The Hand of God Recognized: A Discourse, Delivered on Sunday, 22d February, 1846, in the Independent or Congregational Church, at Dorchester, St. George's Parish, in Observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Building of the Church IT is a pleasing duty to celebrate the Divine faithfulness and mercy to us and to the whole family of mankind; for when so occupied, our employment is most akin to that of those pure spirits who surround the seat Of the Heavenly Glory, and without weariness, interruption or sin, contemplate, adore and praise Him that sitteth upon the Throne and the Lamb forever and ever. It was not without just and sufficient reason that the people of God, in early times, were com manded not only themselves to bear in mind the Lord's doings, but to tell their children his won derful works, and teach them all the way in which an omnipotent, covenant-keeping, merciful God, had led them from the first until then. It is right that a remembrance Of his providential dispensa tions Should be preserved among us, both for warning and encouragement; but how can this be more becomingly and effectually accomplish; ed, than by communicating a knowledge of what we have heard from our fathers, and have our.
