Each nation is limited in its character and in its creative powers. As soon as everybody, living in its midst, has brought out everything in his ability, something new must take the vacated place, something, which may possess peculiarities with new possibilities, with enough saved-up force, to realize them too. Other nationalities will perhaps follow, because this novel art will satisfy their longing, or because it lies so much in the line of that general developement, which, so mysteriously ties together mankind of a certain period. This principle may be expressed also in the Following manner: The demands of an era are felt irrespective of nationality, but one nation only is always predestined to fulfil these demands. The English nation was the predestined one in the eighteenth century. It was a period of universal revolutions, not simply changes, such as are demanded by each generation, but revolutions, demanding a new standard of humanity, the modern humanity and all forms of life and art, had to be revised from the beginning. The civilisation upon the Continent, presided over by France, was beautiful and rich, but sterile. A finish, such as was demanded by the future could be obtained only, from England. Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. Excerpt from Old English Masters It is now many years since Timothy Cole began his series of wood-engravings after the old masters of painting. His first essay was in the field of Italian art After engraving nearly seventy of the great Italian pictures, he turned his attention to the Dutchmen and Flemings at Amsterdam and Antwerp. How successfully he translated the art of the Netherlands is shown in the thirty engravings after Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, and others, which make up the second volume of the series. When he had finished with the Dutchmen, Mr. Cole crossed the Channel to undertake the eighteenth-century painters of England. Since 1894 he has been constantly engaged in cutting blocks after the famous portraits of Reynolds, Gainsborough, Romney, and others and the landscapes of Turner, Constable, and their contemporaries. The present volume contains some forty-eight examples of his work, and represents the more prominent of the older painters of Great Britain, from Hogarth to Landseer. The series, in which this is the third volume, cannot be regarded as other than monumental. No such translation of old pictures has ever been attempted heretofore; and it is safe to say that no similar translation will ever be attempted hereafter. It is doubtful if there is a living engraver on wood, save Mr. Cole, equal to the task. The value of his work-the value of wood-engraving itself-is in no way lessened by the existence of photographic processes of reproduction. That the public is willing to accept a photograph, or that it puts up with the infirmities of the halftone, is no argument against the wood-engraving.
