Book Description
Excerpt from The Holy Child, or the Early Years of Our Lord Jesus Christ A few years since I heard a sermon on the song of the 'shepherds. It, too, revived the wonder of my childhood, as I imagined that brilliant glory shining upon the astonished shepherds. Standing soon after in a city park, when the trees and clouds were all made sur passingly beautiful by the burning of a worthless house, the thought came, Was it like this? There was the cloud for the angel, and here the glory of light! N o it was far more brilliant. We cannot imagine the surprise of the shep herdss And had they not known of a coming Saviour, they would not have been joyful at the words of the angel. Since that time my pur pose has been to try and write a little book, of which this is the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ The miracles of this period are comparatively few. This only means that few are recorded, the Evangelists being occupied in relating the incidents which are more peculiar to the time of which they are speaking. It cannot be doubted that, wherever our Lord went in the course of His preaching, He marked His way by these prodigies of charity and compassion. This 18 obvious, when we consider that, by a kind of accident - though nothing in the arrangement of the Gospels is really accidental - we have in the last chapters of this volume the history of a few successive hours, and these are full of miracles of the first class, - the stilling of the storm on the Lake, the casting out of the legion of devils, the cure of the woman with an issue of blood, the raising to life of the daughter of Jairus, followed by the cure of two blind men, and the casting out of the devil from one who was also dumb. All these things happened within a period of twenty-four hours, of which we have the complete account in the Gospels. And these were miracles, in many cases, worked almost against our Lord's will, that is, which were to some extent forced upon Him by the circumstances of the time. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 6: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels The work of Dr Lange, translated in the accompanying volumes, holds among books the honourable position of being the most complete Life of our Lord. There are other works which more thoroughly investigate the authenticity of the Gospel records, some which more satisfactorily discuss the chronological difficulties involved in this most important of histories, and some which present a more formal and elaborate exegetical treatment of the sources; but there is no single work in which all these branches are so fully attended to, or in which so much matter bearing on the main subject is brought together, or in which so many points are elucidated. The immediate object of this comprehensive and masterly work, was to refute those views of the life of our Lord which had been propagated by Negative Criticism, and to substitute that authentic and consistent history which a truly scientific and enlightened criticism educes from the Gospels. It is now several years since the original work appeared in Germany, but the date of its first appearance will be reckoned a disadvantage only by those who are unacquainted with the recent history of theological literature. No work has in this interval appeared which has superseded, or can be said even to compete with this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ Nothing need be said by the translator in favor of such a work. Let its title, its author's name, and the high eulogy passed upon it by the Supreme Judge of Christian truth, answer for its worth. But the translation itself requires a few words of vindication and apology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
