Excerpt from The Gospel in the Old Testament The events of the past six years have served to bring into clearer relief the permanent religious value of much of the Old Testament teaching, and many of the sermons stand in relation to burning questions which were directly raised by the war, and form as it were landmarks of stages in the crisis through which we have passed. These have been allowed to remain as they were written, on the view that their applica tion to the special circumstances of the moment would illustrate the more clearly the abiding moral and spiritual importance of the Old Testament. Their grouping under this aspect may be gathered from the dates which are given in the Table of Contents. As arranged in the book they follow the natural Old Testament order; and it has happened, without special design, that they offer an outline of Old Testament history in relation to religious thought which is fairly continuous for a considerable period.1 Thus the writer hopes that the book may not be without value as a brief introduction to the historical study of Old Testament religion. Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Why is the account of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel so very different from the one we find in the Synoptic Gospels? Professor Hanson believes that at least part of the answer can be found in the considerable dependence of John's narrative on the Old Testament. The first thirteen chapters of this book are devoted to careful examination of the language of the Gospel in this light. Again and again this shows that passages are heavily influenced by the Old Testament, mostly from the Septuagint but also sometimes by the targumic tradition. This leads to the conclusion that John was writing what might be called a 'prophetic gospel' rather than an historical account of Jesus' life. He saw many passages in what he regarded as scripture as containing prophecies which must have been fulfilled in the life and teaching of Jesus, despite having no historical basis. Although this is not to say that John freely invented speeches and episodes as he chose, John thus felt justified in departing widely from the early tradition about Jesus. Professor Hanson contends that Johannine scholarship has suffered too much from the conviction that scholars must defend the substantially historical nature of the Fourth Gospel. The study ends with a consideration of John's christology and of how the Church today should regard the Fourth Gospel.
