Hypnosis is an interaction where a trance state of consciousness is induced and utilized to produce beneficial psychological and physiological changes by suggestions. Used since ancient times, today it is a scientific, highly effective treatment in medicine freed from authoritarian, manipulative and esoteric burden. It allows communication with the unconscious mind where otherwise unrecognized and are organized and regulated. A major advantage for patients is that after simple guidance they can use it themselves in the form of self-hypnosis. Moreover, in acute medicine such as emergencies or surgeries patients often enter a natural trance state all by itself making hypnotic induction dispensable and hypnotic communication easy and fundamental. However, the potential of hypnosis is yet widely unknown or underrepresented both in psychotherapy and somatic medicine. A deeper knowledge of clinical hypnosis and a wider distribution of relevant study results can bridge the historical living apart and bring back hypnosis to medicine. Hypnosis and suggestions provide a model to explain a wide variety of beneficial as well as harmful effects in medicine, and thus supplement the placebo/nocebo model. In addition, hypnosis and hypnotherapy opens interesting scientific insights into human brain functions, and into character and functioning of suggestions. The goal of leaving the very special setting of books and hypnosis journals and presenting hypnosis to a wide spectrum of readers in psychology and medicine is to increase its visibility, its impact and application. The application concerns both, the specific treatment of specific patients with specific complaints by an expert called hypnotherapy and the more general use of therapeutic hypnotic communication of health care personnel with all patients in all medical situations. On the other hand, hypnosis could benefit from a possible desirable stimulation of further research in this field.

Terrorist attacks seem to mimic other terrorist attacks. Mass shootings appear to mimic previous mass shootings. Financial traders seem to mimic other traders. It is not a novel observation that people often imitate others. Some might even suggest that mimesis is at the core of human interaction. However, understanding such mimesis and its broader implications is no trivial task. Imitation, Contagion, Suggestion sheds important light on the ways in which society is intimately linked to and characterized by mimetic patterns. Taking its starting point in late-nineteenth-century discussions about imitation, contagion, and suggestion, the volume examines a theoretical framework in which mimesis is at the center. The volume investigates some of the key sociological, psychological, and philosophical debates on sociality and individuality that emerged in the wake of the late-nineteenth-century imitation, contagion, and suggestion theorization, and which involved notable thinkers such as Gabriel Tarde, Emile Durkheim, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Furthermore, the volume demonstrates the ways in which important aspects of this theorization have been mobilized throughout the twentieth century and how they may advance present-day analyses of topical issues relating to, e.g. neuroscience, social media, social networks, agent-based modelling, terrorism, virology, financial markets, and affect theory. One of the significant ideas advanced in theories of imitation, contagion, and suggestion is that the individual should be seen not as a sovereign entity, but rather as profoundly externally shaped. Victorian Alchemy explores nineteenth-century conceptions of ancient Egypt as this extant civilisation was being ‘rediscovered’ in the modern world. With its material remnants somewhat paradoxically symbolic of both antiquity and modernity (in the very currentness of Egyptological excavations), ancient Egypt was at once evocative of ancient magical power and of cutting-edge science, a tension that might be productively conceived of as ‘alchemical’. Allusions to ancient Egypt simultaneously lent an air of legitimacy to depictions of the supernatural while projecting a sense of enchantment onto representations of cutting-edge science. Examining literature and other cultural forms including art, photography and early film, Eleanor Dobson traces the myriad ways in which magic and science were perceived as entwined, and ancient Egypt evoked in parallel with various fields of study, from imaging technologies and astronomy, to investigations into the electromagnetic spectrum and the human mind itself. In so doing, counter to linear narratives of nineteenth-century progress, and demonstrating how ancient Egypt was more than a mere setting for Orientalist fantasies or nightmares, the book establishes how conceptions of modernity were inextricably bound up in the contemporary reception of the ancient world, and suggests how such ideas that took root and flourished in the Victorian era persist to this day.
