Book Description
This book investigates Jan Van Eyck's patronage by the Crown of Portugal and his role as diplomat-painter for the Duchy of Burgundy following his first voyage to Lisbon in 1428-1429, when he painted two portraits of Infanta Isabella, who became the third wife of Philip the Good in 1430. New portrait identifications are provided for the Ghent Altarpiece (1432) and its iconographical prototype, the lost Fountain of Life. These altarpieces are analysed with regard to King Joao I's conquest of Ceuta, achieved by his sons, who were hailed as an "illustrious generation." Strong family ties between the dynastic houses of Avis and Lancaster explain Lusitania's sustained fascination with Arthurian lore and the Grail quest. Several chapters of this book are overlaid with a chivalric veneer. A second "secret mission" to Portugal in 1437 by Jan van Eyck is postulated and this diplomatic visit is related to Prince Henry the Navigator's expedition to Tangier and King Duarte's attempts to forge an alliance with Alfonso V of Aragon. Late Eyckian commissions are reviewed in the light of this ill-fated crusade and additional new portraits are identified. The most significant artist of Renaissance Flanders appears to have been patronized as much by the House of Avis as by the Duchy of Burgundy. Barbara von Barghahn is Professor of Art History at George Washington University and a specialist in the art history of Portugal, Spain, and their colonial dominions, as well as Flanders. In 1993, she was conferred O Grao Comendador in the Portuguese Order of Prince Henry the Navigator. She has spent nearly a decade completing research about Jan van Eyck's diplomatic visits to the Iberian Peninsula.

Book Description
Birds have always been a popular and accessible subject, but most books about medieval birds are an overview of their symbolism generally: owl for ill-omen, the pelican as a Eucharistic image and the like. The unique selling point of this book is to focus on one bird and explore it in detail from medieval reality to artistic concept. This book also traces how and why the medieval perception of the swan shifted from hypocritical to courtly within the medieval period. With special attention to ‘The Knight of the Swan’, the book traces the rise and popularity of the medieval swan through literature, history, courtly practices, and art. The book uses thoroughly readable language to appeal to a wide audience and explains some of the reasons why the swan holds such resonance today by covering views of the swan from classic to early modern times.

Book Description
Analyzes the medieval dramatic tradition of history plays (Vengeance of Our Lord) on the siege and destruction of Jerusalem, 70 CE, which enjoyed widespread popularity in the 14th-16th centuries in Germany, France, England, Spain, and Italy. Describes the development of the tradition, and shows how medieval dramatists made use of antisemitic stereotypes and transformed the distant non-Christian past to address contemporary Christian audiences. Traces the sources of this dramatic tradition to Hesegippus's translation of Josephus Flavius in which the fall of Jerusalem is interpreted by Hesegippus as God's punishment of the Jews for deicide, to Church sermons on the Gospels, and to the Vindicta Salvatoris genre describing Titus as a recent convert leading a Christian crusade against deicide Jews who reject the true faith. Includes microfiche reproductions of "Ludus de assumptione beatae Mariae virginis, " "Gothaer Botenrolle, " and Eustache Marcade's "La vengance Jhesucrist."
