Book Description
The book that established Thomas Carlyle’s reputation when first published in 1837, this spectacular historical masterpiece has since been accepted as the standard work on the subject. It combines a shrewd insight into character, a vivid realization of the picturesque, and a singular ability to bring the past to blazing life, making it a reading experience as thrilling as any novel. As John D. Rosenberg observes in his Introduction, The French Revolution is “one of the grand poems of [Carlyle’s] century, yet its poetry consists in being everywhere scrupulously rooted in historical fact.” This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition, complete and unabridged, is unavailable anywhere else.

Book Description
1789-1795 were years of revolutionary drama in France—of struggle protest, war-fever, exasperation, terror, ambition and bloodshed. Few of the many who are remembered from the time were great men, but they lived under the microscope of great times, which gave to their most insignificant qualities portentous proportions. Perhaps, too, their age and country encouraged variety and extravagance of character, few there are few periods of history so rich in personalities. Of the eleven men chosen by J. M. Thompson for study, only three (Sieyès, Lafayette and Dumouriez) survived the Revolution, and lived to see its cynical apotheosis in the Napoleonic Empire. Of the others, Mirabeau died in 1791 and Louvet in 1797, while the remainder—Brissot, Marat, Danton, Fabre, Robespierre and St. Just—were murdered, executed or put to death. J. M. Thompson writes in his introduction, ‘But to all of them the Revolution was an overwhelming experience. What did they do in it? What did they think of it? Let us see.’

Book Description
Three decades ago, François Furet famously announced that the French Revolution was over. Napoleon's armies ceased to march around Europe long ago, and Louis XVIII even returned to occupy the throne of his guillotined brother. And yet the Revolutionâ (TM)s memory continues to hold sway over imaginations and cultures around the world. This sway is felt particularly strongly by those who are interested in history: for the French Revolution not only altered the course of history radically, but became the fountainhead of historicism and the origin of the historical mentality. The sixteen essays collected in this volume investigate the Revolutionâ (TM)s intellectual and material legacies. From popular culture to education and politics, from France and Ireland to Poland and Turkey, from 1789 to the present day, leading historians expose, alongside graduate students, the myriad ways in which the Revolution changed humanityâ (TM)s possible futures, its history, and the idea of history. They attest to how the Revolution has had a continuing global significance, and is still shaping the world today.
