Book Description
The Feeling-State Theory and Protocol of Behavioral and Substance Addictions provides a practical and brief solution for the many different kinds of behaviors that are caused by feeling-states (FSs). The Feeling-State Theory is explained and two different protocols for processing feeling-states are described: The Feeling-State Addiction Protocol, which uses a modified form of EMDR processing to eliminate the FS, and The Feeling-State Image Protocol, which uses the processing protocols of Image Transformation Therapy. The different addictions discussed include substance addictions such as alcohol and heroin addictions, and behavioral addictions such as sex addiction and gambling. Treatment solutions are also provided for behaviors that are not normally thought of as being addictions or compulsions such as codependence and anger. The third edition reflects developments in the conceptualization of Assured-Survival Feelings and the use of the Image/Feeling Protocol for eliminating Feeling-States.

Book Description
The Feeling-State Theory and Protocol of Behavioral and Substance Addictions book provides a practical and brief solution for the many different kinds of behaviors that are caused by feeling-states (FS). The FS is created when a positive event is so intense that the memory of that event becomes fixated in the person's mind. Composed of the memory of the sensations, emotions, thoughts, and behavior of that event, the FS, whenever it is triggered, creates the urges and cravings to do the behavior contained within the fixated memory. Feeling-State Therapy (FST) eliminates addictions by eliminating the FS. Once the FS is eliminated, the urges and cravings to do the addictive behavior caused by the FSs are also eliminated. The Feeling-State Theory and Protocol book explains Feeling-State Theory and provides two different protocols for processing feeling-states: The Feeling-State Addiction Protocol which uses a modified form of EMDR processing to eliminate the FS, and The Feeling-State Image Protocol which uses the processing protocols of Image Transformation Therapy. How to use the protocols is discussed in detail. Also, the specific issues about different behavioral and substance addictions are also discussed. The different addictions discussed include substance addictions such as alcohol and heroin addiction and behavioral addictions such as sex addiction and gambling. Treatment solutions are also provided for behaviors that are not normally thought of as being addictions or compulsions such as codependence and anger. The second edition provides a modified form of the Feeling-State Image Protocol. The basic theory and research of Feeling-State Therapy has been previously published in the journals of Traumatology and the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research. References below.Dr. Miller is also the developer of Image Transformation Therapy (ImTT). ImTT is a completely new psychological therapy for treating trauma, OCD, depression, anxiety, and other difficult-to-treat issues. ImTT is a breakthrough in psychological treatment because the most intense pain and terror can be released without the person having to experience the feelings. ImTT also provides a completely new theory of psychological dynamics called the Survival Model of Psychological Dynamics. The revised second edition contains some changes to the scripts.

Book Description
Image Transformation Therapy (ImTT) is major breakthrough in the treatment of trauma, OCD, depression, anxiety. Intense feelings, such as terror, pain, guilt, and shame, which are often a major obstacle to treatment, can be released without the person having to feel them. This prevents flooding and dissociating during treatment. In addition, ImTT also utilizes a new model of psychological dynamics called the Survival Model of Psychological Dynamics that provides an effective and efficient approach to treating mental disorders. The result is that both emotional and behavioral changes are easier, gentler, and faster. The ImTT Scripts for Therapists manual provides scripts of the ImTT protocols that the therapist can read to their clients. The manual has 32 scripts targeting different disorders such as phobias, depression, anxiety, OCD, anger, chronic pain, and trauma. At the beginning of each section is a discussion of the ImTT approach to the disorder and a script to help the client set up the appropriate target for processing. In addition to the scripts, the manual has an overview of Image Transformation Therapy and a section that can be read to explain ImTT to clients. The fourth edition has new scripts and changes in several previous scripts as a result of the development of the Image/Feeling Protocol (IFP) and a new understanding of how the feeling of frozen effects current behavior.

Book Description
Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Book Description
Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It offers a set of conclusions and recommendations about successful stigma change strategies and the research needed to inform and evaluate these efforts in the United States.

Book Description
Visibility of impulse-control disorders (ICDs) has never been greater than it is today, both in the field of psychiatry and in popular culture. Changes in both society and technology have contributed to the importance of conceptualizing, assessing, and treating impulse-control disorders (ICDs). The ground-breaking Clinical Manual of Impulse-Control Disorders focuses on all of the different ICDs as a group. Here, 25 recognized experts provide cutting-edge, concise, and practical information about ICDs, beginning with the phenomenology, assessment, and classification of impulsivity as a core symptom domain that cuts across and drives the expression of these complex disorders. Subsequent chapters discuss Intermittent explosive disorder, an often overlooked ICD characterized by impulsive aggression. Childhood conduct disorder and the antisocial spectrum. Self-injurious behavior and its relationship to impulsive aggression and childhood trauma. Sexual compulsions and their serious public health implications. Binge eating, a highly familial disorder associated with serious medical complications and psychopathology. Trichotillomania, which may be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, skin picking, and nail biting. Kleptomania, a heterogeneous disorder that shares features with ICDs as well as with mood, anxiety, and addictive disorders. Compulsive shopping, more common in women, with treatments ranging from self-help and financial counseling to trials with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Pyromania and how it differs from arson. Pathological gambling, a maladaptive behavioral addiction that is increasing in step with legalized and Internet gambling. Internet addiction, ranging from excessive seeking of medical information to dangerous sexual behaviors. The remarkable Clinical Manual of Impulse-Control Disorders sheds light on the complex world of ICDs. As such, it will be welcomed not only by clinicians and researchers but also by individuals and family members coping with these disorders.
