Book Description
Fundamentalists say the fulfillment of prophecy proves the divine inspiration of the Bible. Supposedly, the prophets predicted Jesus Christ's birth, ministry, death, and resurrection centuries before he existed. They also supposedly predicted the rise and fall of nations such as Tyre, Egypt, Edom, and Babylon. And they claim to have described the threat of Russia, the founding of Israel in 1948, and the political unification of Europe. Upon closer examination, the claims do not hold up. The so-called messianic prophecies are taken out of context and have nothing to do with Jesus. This book proves: * Nebuchadnezzar never made a wasteland out of Egypt for forty years as Ezekiel predicted. * The world did not end immediately after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD as Jesus had purportedly predicted in Matthew 24. * The biblical prophets predicted nothing about Christ or Antichrist in the distant future but plenty about apocalyptic doom and messianic glory in their own near future. * And much more! Find out why biblical explanations of the world today do not add up and why this matters in The Failure of Bible Prophecy.

Book Description
A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT KIND OF BOOK ABOUT BIBLICAL PROPHECY! Many bestsellers have been written about Bible prophecy & their influence is sure to increase as the millennium approaches. Their authors first claim that many accurate predictions were made by prophets of ancient times, & then insist they themselves have the same ability, using the Bible as a crystal ball to predict the unusually apocalyptic future. Rarely have their methods of interpretation, their logic, or their historical accuracy been questioned. Tim Callahan rises to the challenge with wit & clarity. By comparing the predictions to actual history, as well as to each other & by noting evidence of historical anachronisms & faulty scholarship on the part of fundamentalist apologists, Callahan subjects the prophecies of the Bible to rigorous analysis. Callahan also dissects end of the world prophecies & examines the connections between these & modern conspiracy theories. To order: Millennium Press, 2761 N. Book Description
A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

Book Description
The study reported in this volume grew out of some theoretical work, one phase of which bore specifically on the behavior of individuals in social movements that made specific (and unfulfilled) prophecies. We had been forced to depend chiefly on historical records to judge the adequacy of our theoretical ideas until we by chance discovered the social movement that we report in this book. At the time we learned of it, the movement was in mid-career but the prophecy about which it was centered had not yet been disconfirmed. We were understandably eager to undertake a study that could test our theoretical ideas under natural conditions. That we were able to do this study was in great measure due to the support obtained through the Laboratory for Research in Social Relations of the University of Minnesota. This study is a project of the Laboratory and was carried out while we were all members of its staff. We should also like to acknowledge the help we received through a grant-in-aid from the Ford Foundation to one of the authors, a grant that made preliminary exploration of the field situation possible.

Book Description
In recent years, there has been rise in popularity and visibility of the debate about the last things. Preterists and Futurists have published books, articles, and even movies promoting their respective views. This debate has elevated the interest of the Christian public in eschatological issues. Along with the increased interest in eschatology, there has been a rise in popularity of the Preterist view, which holds that most or all of the prophecies about ChristÕs coming have already been fulfilledÑthat the Òsecond comingÓ took place in 70 AD. Most of the discussion from those who espouse the Preterist view, however, revolves around certain passages in the New Testament, and their treatment of Old Testament passages is sporadic and selective. The importance of the book of Daniel in these discussions cannot be overstated. However, most commentaries on Daniel from a Futurist perspective have not dealt with the PreteristsÕ interpretations of the key prophetic passages. There simply is no detailed commentary on the book of Daniel that addresses the Presterist interpretations of this important book. This book is a commentary on the entire book of Daniel from a Futurist perspective that specifically addresses the Preterist interpretations of the key prophetic passages. This is not a book that selects passages out of the context of the book and attempts to explain their prophetic significance. Rather, this is a commentary on the entire book of Daniel that places these critical prophetic passages in their literary and historical context, and then deals with the various interpretations of these passages as they fit into the context of the book as a whole.
