During times of crisis and loss, distressed members in some congregations may feel abandoned or not cared for when they most need the support of family, loved ones and the church. What concerns many parishioners during such times, is their inability to connect with their priest, who often may be far out of the conciliatory loop due to procedural technicalities. As a result, parishioners tend to transfer membership from their home parish, because of the lack of expected support. Instead, they become attached to another community of faith where they expect to find love, support and care-giving. This situation occurs and is happening in many places of worship. However, my focus for this project is the Episcopal Church of Liberia. I have observed that the Episcopal Church of Liberia does not presently provide adequate pastoral support to parishioners during the period of distress and loss. For example during my summer vacation I conducted an interview with a female member of one of Episcopal Churches. She was in tears because she felt that when she needed the church most, they did not come to her aid. Instead she found the level of bureaucracy to talk to a priest, so prohibitive that she did not receive the desired help. This woman had to endure the loss of her daughter without consolation from her priest. In contrast, I also observed that the Pentecostal Churches were attracting many members from the Episcopal Churches because of the manner in which they helped members of their church who were grief stricken. In this paper, I intend to explore and suggest positive ways for the Episcopal Church of Liberia to meet the needs of parishioners. Specifically, I propose to develop an international program of pastoral care-giving which [will] be sensitive to Liberian customs and traditions and will be provided to those in need.

In most college and university libraries, materials published before 1800 have been moved into special collections, while the post-1923 books remain in general circulation. But books published between these dates are vulnerable to deaccessioning, as libraries increasingly reconfigure access to public-domain texts via digital repositories such as Google Books. Even libraries with strong commitments to their print collections are clearing out the duplicates, assuming that circulating copies of any given nineteenth-century edition are essentially identical to one another. When you look closely, however, you see that they are not. Many nineteenth-century books were donated by alumni or their families decades ago, and many of them bear traces left behind by the people who first owned and used them. In Book Traces, Andrew M. Stauffer adopts what he calls "guided serendipity" as a tactic in pursuit of two goals: first, to read nineteenth-century poetry through the clues and objects earlier readers left in their books and, second, to defend the value of keeping the physical volumes on the shelves. Finding in such books of poetry the inscriptions, annotations, and insertions made by their original owners, and using them as exemplary case studies, Stauffer shows how the physical, historical book enables a modern reader to encounter poetry through the eyes of someone for whom it was personal.
