Book Description
This book is a sequel to Brainstorms: Epilepsy in Our Words, Dr. Schachter's highly acclaimed guide for people with epilepsy. The Brainstorms Companion: Epilepsy in Our View focuses on the family, friends, co-workers, and support staff of the patient. The book helps them to cope with the emotional trauma and to understand exactly what is happening when they witness a seizure. The first section provides an overview of epilepsy from a medical perspective and examines the wide variety of seizure manifestations that people with epilepsy have. Then, friends, family members, and associates of people with epilepsy describe in their own words what they see and how they feel when witnessing a seizure. The next section is written by people with epilepsy, who examine what their lives are like. The last section, written by two nurse specialists in epilepsy, gives practical advice on how to live safely with epilepsy. An index guides readers to descriptions of specific seizure manifestations and helps them find accounts of experiences similar to their own. A noted epilepsy specialist, Dr. Frederick Andermann, has written a Foreword.

Book Description
Psychiatric Controversies in Epilepsy addresses controversial clinical issues of the psychiatric aspects of epilepsy. The book explores the reasons behind the poor communication between psychiatrists and neurologists and suggests potential remedies to this important problem, and two chapters are devoted to examining whether psychiatrists and neurologists are properly trained to recognize and treat conditions that both disciplines commonly encounter in clinical practice. Identification of the causes behind the high rate of comorbidity between epilepsy and mood, anxiety, psychotic and attention deficit disorders is given high priority in the volume, and a specific review of the evidence of common pathogenic mechanisms that may be operant in epilepsy and these psychiatric disorders is included. Recently identified bidirectional relationship between mood disorders and epilepsy and its implication in the course and response to treatment of the seizure disorder are also explored. Several chapters are devoted to rectify common misunderstandings of the use of psychotropic drugs in patients with epilepsy, including the use of antidepressant and central nervous system stimulants. Finally, one chapter explores the possibility of organic causes of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures. - Compiles into one source the important controversial issues of the psychiatric aspects of epilepsy, which have significant implications in clinical practice - Authors are internationally recognized authorities in the field of psychiatric aspects of epilepsy

Book Description
Seizures are frightening events. They frighten the patients who experience them; they frighten those who witness them; they also frighten many physicians who have to deal with them. Most individuals with seizures present to family physicians or to emergency room physicians. However, despite the fact that seizures are among the most common neurological conditions, most general practitioners, family practice specialists, and intemists do not see large numbers of patients with seizures. Given the apoplectic appearance of generalized tonic clonic convulsions, it is not difficult to understand why they arouse such emotional responses in those that experience them, those that witness them, and those whose care is sought for them. Seizures are symptoms of something wrong with the brain. Many different kinds of perturbations in brain anatomy, chemistry, or physiology can produce seizures. For many individuals, seizures occur in the context of an acute illness and will not recur once that illness is treated. These individuals do not have epilepsy. They have transient disturbances in brain function attributable to systemic medical conditions. It is important to recognize these issues, because, first, the seizure may be the initial, or even only, manifestation of the underlying medical problem and this needs to be recognized.
