This book examines the key Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) relating to environmental sustainability and provides a cutting-edge assessment of current progress with the view of achieving these goals by 2030. Within South Asia, the book pays particular attention to Bangladesh, as a country representative of emerging economies which are struggling to meet their goals. Drawing on the three pillars of sustainability, the volume addresses the following goals: Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water and Life on Land (Goals 6, 7, 12, 13, 14 and 15). The book examines where progress has been made and why some key targets have not been achieved or will be difficult to achieve. The chapters focus on environmental sustainability in different sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, fisheries and aquaculture and natural resource management. The aim of this volume is to highlight key lessons and recommendations on how research in the various sectors can feed into the pathway of meeting the SDGs highlighted in this book. The analysis derived from Bangladesh can be used as a reference point for other developing nations in Asia, and globally, with a view to guiding policy for the achievement of the SGDs. In the face of megatrends such as globalisation, climate and demographic change, digitalisation and urbanisation, many cities and regions are grappling with critical challenges to preserve social inclusion, foster economic growth and transition to the low carbon economy. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set the global agenda for the coming decade to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. A Territorial Approach to the Sustainable Development Goals argues that cities and regions play a critical role in this paradigm shift and need to embrace the full potential of the SDGs as a policy tool to improve people's lives. The report estimates that at least 105 of the 169 SDG targets will not be reached without proper engagement of sub-national governments. It analyses how cities and regions are increasingly using the SDGs to design and implement their strategies, policies and plans; promote synergies across sectoral domains; and engage stakeholders in policy making. The report proposes an OECD localised indicator framework that measures the distance towards the SDGs for more than 600 regions and 600 cities in OECD and partner countries. The report concludes with a Checklist for Public Action to help policy makers implement a territorial approach to the SDGs.

In 1992 world leaders met at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to reaffirm the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment that was established on June 16, 1972 in Stockholm. The meeting resulted in the adoption of Agenda 21 by the member states which is a framework for the transition to a more sustainable world. In 2012 the members gathered to assess and reaffirm the importance of progress towards the efforts of Agenda 21. In response to this the Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine held a workshop to inform the policies that are discussed at the 2012 Earth Summit. The workshop, held in Woods Hole, Massachusetts on July 25-26, 2011, focused on the issue of sustainability and health as well as the linkages that are currently present between the two. The workshop included presentations and discussions which are summarized in Public Health Linkages with Sustainability: Workshop Summary. The report presents how different areas of public health, such as food and water resources, link to sustainability and opportunities or venues that can be examined.
