Book Description
The Italian Seminars, previously unpublished in English, comprises lectures W.R. Bion gave in Rome, in 1977. The volume consists of questions from the floor and Bion's fascinating and, at times, controversial answers. The lectures are divided in two: the first part was organized by the Italian Psychoanalytical Society and the second by the Via Pollaiolo Research Group. Bion's replies examine such diverse subjects as difficulties in the interaction between the therapist and the patient; music and psychoanalysis; non-verbal communication in the consulting room; and methodology in psychoanalysis.

Book Description
In her book, The Closed Hand: Images of the Japanese in Modern Peruvian Literature, Rebecca Riger Tsurumi captures the remarkable story behind the changing human landscape in Peru at the end of the nineteenth century when Japanese immigrants established what would become the second largest Japanese community in South America. She analyzes how non-Japanese Peruvian narrators unlock the unspoken attitudes and beliefs about the Japanese held by mainstream Peruvian society, as reflected in works written between 1966 and 2006. Tsurumi explores how these Peruvian literary giants, including Mario Vargas Llosa, Miguel Gutiérrez, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Carmen Ollé, Pilar Dughi, and Mario Bellatin, invented Japanese characters whose cultural differences fascinated and confounded their creators. She compares the outsider views of these Peruvian narrators with the insider perceptions of two Japanese Peruvian poets, José Watanabe and Doris Moromisato, who tap personal experiences and memories to create images that define their identities. The book begins with a brief sociohistorical overview of Japan and Peru, describing the conditions in both nations that resulted in Japanese immigration to Peru and concluding in contemporary times. Tsurumi traces the evolution of the terms "Orient" and "Japanese/Oriental" and the depiction of Asians in Modernista poetry and in later works by Octavio Paz and Jorge Luis Borges. She analyzes the images of the Japanese portrayed in individual works of modern Peruvian narrative, comparing them with those created in Japanese Peruvian poetry. The book concludes with an appendix containing excerpts from Tsurumi's interviews and correspondence in Spanish with writers and poets in Lima and Mexico City.

Book Description
The 2005 bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth is an opportunity to re-evaluate the achievement of one of the great figures of the fairy tale and storytelling tradition, a beloved writer famous for The Snow Queen and The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and The Red Shoes and many other now classic tales. Jack Zipes broadens our understanding of Andersen by exploring the relation of the Danish writer's work to the development of literature and of the fairy tale in particular. Based on thirty-five years of researching and writing on Andersen, this new book is a welcome reconsideration of Andersen's place and of his reception in English-speaking countries and on film.

Book Description
Guided Reading is the classroom Reading Recovery with supplements. In the classroom every child is involved in focussed reading instruction, small groups necessitate exceptional organization, all this without the year-long training that Reading Recovery participants have. Over the years teachers have been directed towards Guided Reading without knowledge of how to organize the class while working with small groups and further, without the knowledge of what is involved in overt reading instruction. This book will change that and give teachers the resources to organize and put in place worthwhile and relevant activities for children to independently engage in. In this book, significant suggestions are forwarded to make Guided Reading easier to implement and more effective. This book challenges held views about Guided Reading - misconceptions and misapplications of Guided Reading will be highlighted and in place will be effective pedagogy to help children move towards being truly confident, thinking readers. The teaching practices emphasized are: * Managing differentiated reading instruction for early, developing, early fluent readers, including a chapter relating to older readers. * Class management while working with small groups - independent tasks. * Questioning and prompting so children acquire and use self-help reading and comprehension strategies. * Encouraging student talk where they explore and exchange ideas. * Assessment (and recording) that informs instruction.

Book Description
"Foreword by Stephen R. Covey Are outer demands for more success, more money, and more prestige overwhelming your inner longings? Is your work no longer energizing you? For many people in the work world, years of frenetic activity and blind ambition are actually killing them. They are enslaved to the opinions of others...to the financial burden of an extravagant lifestyle...to a crushing fear of failure. The great Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen succinctly illuminated foibles like these in his treasured fairy tales for children and adults. Now, the powerful lessons of these classic folk tales have been ingeniously applied to the complexities of the modern workplace. The Ugly Duckling Goes to Work probes H. C. Andersen's sharp and witty stories for lessons that will inspire you to bring more meaning, more energy, and more joy to your work -- to create a meaningful work life. You'll read about: * The Emperor's New Clothes: This prickly story pokes fun at phoniness and snobbery and shows how fear and ego can drive you to foolishness. You'll learn to reclaim your own agenda by using two terrific fool-detectors: self-awareness and candid conversations. * The Ugly Duckling: This fierce tale of rejection, survival, longing, learning, and growing teaches you that success is not just having a great career, but finding out where you belong and becoming the person you were meant to be. * The Dung Beetle: The dung beetle, a self-absorbed and status-driven creature, provides a cautionary example of the need to get past illusions and face the reality of your strengths and weaknesses in order to succeed. * The Nightingale: This charming story looks at a plain little bird that sings the most enchanting songs, drawing its strength from nature, meaning, and freedom -- in sharp contrast to the gold, titles, and applause that motivate the emperor's court. The tale teaches you to push beyond mere perfunctory performances and reach your full potential. In addition to the concise summaries and probing analyses of H. C. Andersen's tales, The Ugly Duckling Goes to Work includes the author's new translations of the full texts, which restore the humor and rich detail often muted in previous English translations. Simple but never simplistic, these insightful interpretations and translations of some of the most cherished stories ever written will help you look deeply at your life, laugh lightly at your flaws, and make the changes needed to build a more meaningful, joyful work life."
