Book Description
Excerpt from Hand Book of Wisconsin: Or, Guide to Travellers Immigrants: A Companion to Chapman's Map of Wisconsin The object of this work is to aid immigrants who are seeking a Western home in making; their selection, by presenting the resources of each portion of this State by Counties - the position they occupy, the nearness to market, and facilities for reaching it Its object is also to direct the traveller to the best and easiest route through the State. From the enquiries the Author daily receives, he believes that such a work is called for, and as there has never been anything published which in any manner occupies the ground it takes, he confidently presents it to the public as a needed book. It is intended as a companion to "Chapman's Map Of Wisconsin," and all references to the Map are intended for that. Book Description
Excerpt from Western Portraiture, and Emigrants' Guide: A Description of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa; With Remarks on Minnesota, and Other Territories There have been published several very useful and interesting Guides and Gazetteers of the West - for times past - but the transformations, the improvements, are so rapid and extensive, that those books give Only Slight and imperfect knowledge of that progressive region, as the present finds it. So quick and numer ous are the changes in the West, that the traveler of the spring, returning by the same route in autumn, scarcely knows his whereabouts; and the pioneer who makes a summer's visit to his old home-place, is equally surprised, on his return, at the changes which have taken place, the advancement made there, and he hardly recognizes the locality of his new home, after the short absence of one season. Immigrants have located, new shantees have been stuck up, and they even succeeded by new houses, new fences have been made, new roads laid, and new ditches dug. The enchanting power of industry, in a genial clime, on a fertile soil, has done this; but it is not illusory enchantment. Thus, the descriptive book of the earlier days, is but a dim volume now; and another is wanted nearly as much as if the first were not written.
