Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Chemical Science, Vol. 1 of 2 The First Part is devoted to the general laws of the science, and to the properties and modes of action of the Powers or Agents which are concerned in the production of chemical phaenomena. In the Second Part are detailed the properties and relations of ponderable bodies, and their compounds. This part is formed into two divisions; in the first is given an account of the properties of Inorganic matter; the sub jcet of the second division is Organic matter; and Organic matter has been, as usual, subdivided into Vegetable and An. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 The principal power productive of chemical phenomena, is that species of attraction, exerted between the parti. Cles of bodies, which brings them into intimate and per manent union. From its exertion between particles of a similar nature, arise -the forms under which bodies exist, and many of the physical qualities of which they are pos sessed. And from its exertion between particles of differ ent kinds, are derived the greater number of substances which compose our globe, - these consisting of certain ele ments retained by this power in a state of combination. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Chemistry, Including the Applications of the Science in the Arts, Vol. 1 of 2 In preparing a new edition of his Elements of Chemistry, the Author has incorporated much new and accurate information with the old, while he has endeavoured to give to both the space and the measure of import ance which their true value demanded. In such a work, judicious selec tion of matter is as necessary as careful condensation, while the grounds of the selection are changed with the shifting point of view from which, in a progressive science, the retrospect is taken. The, important bearings of the laws of Heat, particularly in reference to the physical condition of matter, have led to their consideration before the chemical properties of substances, in this as in most other elementary treatises on chemistry. Light is then shortly considered, chiefly in refer ence to its chemical relations. The principles of its Nomenclature, in which, compared with many sciences, chemistry has been highly fortunate, are then explained, together with the symbolical notation and chemical formulae in use, by means of which the composition of highly compound bodies is expressed with the same palpable distinctness which, in arith metic, attends the use of figures, in the place of words, for the expression of numerical su'ms. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Chemistry The brief historical treatment of elements, theories, and laws places the student en rapport with the great names and science-building periods of chemistry. It is not nec essary - hardly even desirable, perhaps - that exact dates be memorized. In the descriptive portions, paramount importance as seems proper is given to chemical properties. More Space than is usual has been devoted to the discussion of laws, theories, and general principles, since a perfectly clear understanding can be obtained in no other way, and a half idea is usually worse than none at all. Exercises and problems, following these discussions, have the same end in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
