Book Description
This standard text has been fully revised and updated for its fourth edition to reflect continuing technological changes, as well as issues such as social inclusion, lifelong learning and European employment legislation. Chapter 1 on the working environment has been completely rewritten. The present environment brings problems of staff motivation, de-professionalization and the loss of control: Chapter 2 reminds readers of basic motivation theories, now presented in a more logical sequence, and how to deal with such problems. Chapter 3 on workforce planning has been retitled Human Resource Planning and revised to take into account the modes of staffing appropriate for today's turbulent environment. Effective human resource planning requires excellent selection and recruitment procedures: best practice and developments in this area are explored in Chapters 4, Job Descriptions and Person Specifications, and 5, Recruitment and Selection of Staff. In Chapter 6 on staff appraisal more attention has been given to multi-rating approaches, such as 360° whereby different aspects of work can be assessed by different groups of people, and to appraisal of junior by senior staff. The last decade has seen increased emphasis on training and development to deliver high quality services in a climate of constant change. Chapter 7 has therefore been reordered and expanded in order to reflect new approaches and changes in this area. In Chapter 8, Staff Supervision and Interpersonal Skills, recent emphasis on leadership and counselling skills are reflected, as is the growing need to do more with less through enhanced time management and stress management techniques. With this new edition, this core guide brings professionals involved in managing library and information staff up to date with how to cope with the most pressing problems and challenges in today's fast-changing environment.

Book Description
Here is what the experts have to say about the effects of computer applications on selected facets of personnel administration in libraries. Senior library managers, systems librarians, and library educators with a special interest in automation analyze the changes in the workplace that have already occurred and discuss those that will confront library professionals in the future. Personnel Administration in an Automated Environment covers the latest issues and research on the topic. Among the subjects dealt with are education and compensation of automation librarians, the nature of jobs in an automated library, the opportunities for innovation and change in technical library jobs, new personnel issues as a result of automating users’services, changing staff requirements in mid-sized academic libraries, the intersection of library and computer center tasks, and the impact of computerization on job satisfaction and performance evaluation. Administrators, personnel officers, and department heads in mid-sized to large libraries with computer-based operations will find both research-based results and reasonable speculation on everyday problems. A bibliography of the most recent books and articles will be useful to scholars of the subject.

Book Description
The problems of managing libraries have been multiplying. The operations of libraries have become increasingly complex, involving in many cases mechanization, centralization, and computerization of library services. The size and scope of collections have grown rapidly as they attempt to keep up with the geometric expansion of knowledge, and so have the variety of services offered or contemplated and the expectations of users. These kinds of change and growth have made it more important than ever that libraries utilize comprehensive frameworks for planning and decision making concerning their operations and resources, and the major focus of this book is on the development of such analytical frameworks for university and large public library systems. "It is in the spirit of making a contribution to the development of such frameworks," Professor Hamburg writes, "that this book has been written.... Since there is an inseparable need not only for improved library statistical data systems but also for the above-mentioned frameworks for rational planning and decision making, we have devoted considerable effort to the development of analytical models that might assist library administrators in making decisions that would maximize the flow of benefits imparted to the communities the library serves. Some of the results of this model-building effort are reported in these pages.... "Some of the methods discussed in this text fall within the discipline known as management science (or operations research). There is a large communications gap between librarians, who use English to make themselves understood, and management scientists, who routinely use mathematics as a language. We have tried to communicate clearly to those concerned with library management, and, except in parts of Chapter 4, we have managed to keep the presentation on a verbal rather than a mathematical level." The six chapters are entitled Introduction and Summary, Library Objectives and Overall Performance Measures, A Framework for Library Decision Making, Library Models and Empirical Findings, Development of a Management Information System for Libraries, and Higher-Level Decision Making.
