Book Description
This research was performed to investigate the effects that weapon recoil has on aiming accuracy and on the number of shots soldiers are willing to fire. The research also investigates the possible benefits of adding a recoil- mitigating device to high recoil weapons. One hundred five soldiers were assigned to one of seven test groups, with each group firing only one of the test weapons. Five of the test weapons were shotguns of various weights and cartridge impulse levels to provide different levels of recoil energy and recoil velocity. The remaining two groups fired one of the two weapons with a recoil- mitigating device. Each test group fired five shots with a baseline weapon, followed by as many shots as they were willing to fire with the test weapon; shots were temporally spaced by approximately 30 seconds. The aiming accuracy was recorded via a small video camera mounted on the forestock of the weapon. Results showed that although significantly more shots could be fired with weapons with a recoil-mitigating device, the aiming accuracy was no better than that of weapons without the device. The higher recoil test weapons had significantly poorer aiming accuracy than the weapon with the lightest recoil, and the aiming error with the high recoil weapons was consistently above the target.

Book Description
The classic shotgun reference from one of the top experts in the field. In this near-legendary handbook, respected firearms expert Bob Brister offers advice, instructions, and solutions to every situation a shotgunner might face, making Shotgunning a guide from which both seasoned veterans and novice shooters will benefit. Based on years of tests, meticulous study of data, and a lifetime of insider expertise, this book will help any shooter make every shot count. A veritable encyclopedia of the shotgun for the modern shooter and outdoorsman, Shotgunning details the selection of guns, loads, and chokes; required leads (translated into “bird lengths” for easier shooting recognition); shot velocity and penetration; the effects of recoil on the shooter; wind and temperature effects on shotshells; and much more. Data analysis puts blithely held truths to the test. Myths are debunked, and Brister’s conclusions are supported with hundreds of photographs, lending Shotgunning an authority that many recent, worthwhile books on the subject cannot claim. Brister brightly and boldly presents his readers with the science of shotgunning, but he never forgets the art that makes shooting a sport. Shotgunning is an elegant and educational mélange—a unique and invaluable guidebook that any shotgunner must own. Book Description
In order to assess the value added by the application of fire control technology to sniper weapons, "error budgets" are developed as a function of range for several sniper weapon systems. A system is comprised of the weapon and its associated ammunition as well as the type of fire control technology provided that weapon. For this study, a total of four weapon-ammunition combinations were used and three levels of fire control sophistication were examined. The "baseline system" consists of a two-person sniper team using a standard rifle, spotting scope, and laser range finder to make aiming corrections. The "cross-wind system" adds a laser crosswind sensing device and more accurate range finder incorporated into the spotting scope. The "fire control system" performs a full ballistic firing solution and presents a real- time corrected aim point to the shooter. One-sigma system errors and probabilities of hit against an E-silhouette target are calculated.

Book Description
Sufficient information is not available to determine health hazards associated with weapon recoil. This study assessed the injury response in U.S. Army soldiers after firing a shoulder-fired weapon producing recoil energy at the upper limit authorized. Additionally, the authors observed injury rate and potential injury risk factors. Fifteen infantrymen fired 15 shots using a weapon system producing 59.09 ft-lbs of recoil energy. Markers of injury assessed pre-firing, immediately post-firing, and 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours post-firing included subjective pain, pain-pressure threshold, bruising, range of motion, strength, a lifting task, and laboratory markers. Thermal imaging and MRI were used to assess skin temperature and edema. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and descriptive statistics. All 15 volunteers exhibited bruising at the anterior shoulder, and 11 reported pain with motion post-firing. Fourteen volunteers (93%) sustained evidence of soft tissue injury on MRI. Three (20%) sustained facial lacerations. Skin tissue temperature increased immediately post-firing and returned to baseline 24 hours later. Dominant handgrip strength had the best predictive value for injury severity on MRI. The authors conclude that soldiers are at risk for soft tissue contusions and lacerations at the upper threshold of allowable recoil energy. Injury was characterized by elevated skin temperature, pain with motion, and decreased pain threshold immediately post-firing. Signal intensity changes on MRI were consistent with muscle contusion for up to 96 hours post-firing. (21 tables, 23 figures, 55 refs.).

Book Description
• A solid guide for becoming a better shot • Wing shooting, sporting clays, skeet shooting • Expert teacher and coach shares years of experience Successful Shotgunning focuses on wing-shooting and sporting clays techniques. Gain a better understanding of the shooting process as a whole as you sharpen your skills and become a better shot. How to evaluate moving targets in wing-shooting situations in the field, in a competitive environment, on a sporting clays course, or on a skeet field. Choose the correct gun and gun fit for you; learn to diagnose some common eye problems and correct your aim; tame recoil; and deal with the challenges of various sporting clays targets. Quote from the book: "Successful shotgunning isn't an inherent trait, it is a skill and it must be learned like any other skill. It requires systematic study and the ability to accurately calculate the variables of moving targets. My coaching methods involve an intuitive technique that is based on pure logic and a systematic breakdown of all the variables involved. This is how the experts shoot. Over a period of time they build up a personal mental repertoire of sight pictures, which they can then successfully apply to each target, regardless of whether it is a quail, dove, duck or clay target. They then have the ability to see a subtle but consequential target/barrel relationship on every shot and adjust to each different shooting situation."
