Book Description
The purpose of this study was to examine whether meditation reduces perceived stress, blood pressure or pulse among baccalaureate nursing students. The research question asked, "Does using a relaxation technique have an effect on the perceived stress level of nursing students?" This one-group comparative design included a sample of baccalaureate nursing students in their second semester of the nursing program at a small liberal arts college in central Minnesota. A perceived stress scale (Cohen, 1983) was used to measure the students' stress level before and after the use of mindful meditation. Students' blood pressure and pulse were also taken before and after the meditation to determine if there was a change fro the use of mindful meditation. The conceptual framework used in this study was Neuman's Systems Model to describe the connection between the patient, the health care system, and the outcomes of stress. A positive difference supported the research hypothesis, which stated that the meditation technique would lower the perceived stress level, blood pressure, or pulse. The PSS score and pulse both tested to be significantly lower after the meditation technique, while both blood pressure measurements tested to be significantly higher after the meditation technique.
