This study examined pulmonary function, ventilation, exercise tolerance and the fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in healthy controls (CON; n=7) and asthmatics (ASTH; n=7) following two-weeks of high intensity interval training (HIIT). An increase in FeNO above basal levels is associated with lung inflammation and is gaining popularity as a reliable diagnostic tool for the treatment of asthma. PURPOSE: The extent that HIIT decreases FeNO and thus, exercise tolerance in asthmatic subjects has not been previously investigated. METHODS: Pulmonary function was assessed using peak expiratory flow [PEF], forced vital capacity [FVC], and the ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second to FVC [FEV1/FVC]. FeNO was measured noninvasively using a NIOX portable device. Both groups performed a progressive exercise test (20 W/min) on a cycle ergometer to determine peak values of O2 uptake (VO2peak), CO2 output (VCO2peak), ventilation (VE) and time to exhaustion (TTE). Each subject completed six sessions of HIIT, which included 8 minutes of loadless cycling warm-up, 10 x 60 s bouts of exercise interspersed with 60 s periods of recovery at a low intensity of cycling. The intensity of the HIIT protocol was set at a target equivalent to 75% peak WR for ASTH and 80% peak WR for CON. Each training session was followed by 5 minutes of loadless cycling cool down. Following completion of all HIIT sessions, each subject repeated the pulmonary and exercise tests that were performed prior to training. A two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures (ANOVA-RM) was used to examine main effects, group (CON vs. ASTH) and time (Pre- vs. Post-HIIT) and significant interactions (Group x Time). The prevalence of asthma is on the rise, affecting the quality of life of those who suffer from this condition. There are several treatments for asthma, exercise being one of the most affordable, while also offering other physiologic benefits. High intensity interval training (HIIT) consists of short bouts of maximal intensity exercise, followed by short periods of recovery. Endurance training consists of continuous, steady-state aerobic exercise, usually around 70% to 80% of maximal heart rate for 30 to 60 minutes in duration. Improvements in asthmatic symptoms have been seen utilizing both training protocols; however, most of the participants in these studies have been children. The purpose of this study was to determine if exercise will improve asthmatic symptoms of recreationally active adults, and to determine if there is a difference in interval and endurance training protocols in terms of asthmatic symptoms. It was hypothesized that exercise will improve asthmatic symptoms; however, due to lack of recruitment, the second aim of this study was not addressed. One recreationally active adult, 26 years of age, with no other chronic diseases, was recruited through the use of flyers. The participant was informed of the risks and benefits before partaking in any training protocol. Due to the fact that only one participant was recruited and time constraints to conduct a crossover design study (as was originally intended), the participant was randomly assigned to a six-week endurance protocol. Biometric and pulmonary measurements were taken before and after the protocol. It may appear that there was a slight decrease in pulmonary functions following the six-week endurance protocol; however, the measurements are likely within normal variation. Because this was a case study, no statistical analyses could be performed to determine statistical significance.

Exercise induced bronchoconstriction (EIBC) occurs in response to high ventilations during exercise, which cools and dries the airways, triggering an inflammatory cascade. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is associated with reductions in inflammation, improvements in cardiorespiratory outcomes, and mental health in healthy adults; however, the impact of HIIT in adults with EIBC is unclear. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the impact of a 6-week HIIT intervention on physiological (e.g. inflammation, ventilation, and cardiorespiratory fitness) and psychological (i.e. anxiety) domains of health among adults with EIBC and healthy adults, and the impact of HIIT on clinical outcomes (i.e. asthma control) among adults with EIBC. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study design was used. A 6-week HIIT intervention was implemented in adults (18-44 years) with EIBC and healthy controls. Sessions were conducted three times per week and consisted of cycling at 10% PPO for 1 minute followed by 90% PPO for 1 minute, repeated 10 times. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has become extremely popular in recent years, however, current HIIT prescriptions lack guidelines regarding interval intensities and associated margins. The purpose of this study is to investigate Run Time to Exhaustion (Te) and provide insight regarding HIIT intensities for future aerobic exercise programming. Ten healthy adult male recreational runners (Age=22.9 ± 2.5 yr., Ht=1.72 ± 0.1m, BM=74.1 ± 7.4 kg) measured maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) (52.4 ± 6.1ml/kg/min) with a graded exercise test (GXT). Running speed was determined using ACSM running equation for exercise metabolism. Protocols 1-3 were HIIT running sessions, and Protocol 4 was a continuous running trial, all of the same average intensity (80% VO2max). All HIIT trials implemented aerobic style bout durations of 2 minutes each, with a 1:1 work to active rest/recovery ratio. A repeated measures ANOVA determined that mean Te differed statistically between the 4 protocols. Protocol 1 elicited a significant reduction in mean Te when compared to all other conditions. Based on the findings of this study, recreational runners can monitor variables and/or prescribe intensities to maximize economy and efficacy of aerobic HIIT program implementation.

Abstract: This study compared the acute cardiopulmonary and metabolic effects of four high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols using varying intensities during the work and recovery periods. Eleven participants (5 males, 6 females) performed four, 20-minute HIIT protocols at a 1:1 "work:recovery" ratio on a cycle ergometer in random order. The work:recovery relative intensities, based upon previously determined maximum work rates, were: 80%:0%, 80%:50%, 100%:0%, and 100%:50%. Oxygen uptake, heart rate, blood lactate, and rating of perceived exertion were measured. Data were analyzed using a two-way, repeated measures ANOVA (p ≤ 0.05). Oxygen uptake and heart rate were expressed as a percentage of the peak values established during a prior graded exercise test. There were clear differences in physiological response between protocols. The 80:50 and 100:0 may produce the best combination of effects. The 100:50 produced the greatest physiological response, however, it may not be practical for the general population.
