Greenhouse Studies of the Manganese Nutrition of Soybean (Glycine Max (L.) Merr.) Using Soil and Nutrient Cultures
Author: Joao Kluthcouski
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Manganese
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
Greenhouse studies were conducted using soil and solution cultures to: (i) determine the detrimetal effects of manganese on growth and grain yield of soybeans; (ii) determine the variation of manganese in soybean leaves; (iii) determine the critical levels of manganese in the plant; (iv) measure the effect of flooding and of silicon on growth and manganese concentrations in Hill soybeans; and (v) evaluate the differential response of three soybean cultivars to manganese levels. Hill soybeans were grown with six levels of applied manganese ranging from 0 to 80 ppm. Reduction in vegetative growth was observed when the manganese concentration in the youngest fully mature leaf exceeded around 200 ppm. Seed yields appeared to be less sensitive to high levels of manganese than top growth. Manganese concentrations decreased from bottom to of the plant, and for a given trifoliolate, manganese decreased with time. Hill soybeans were flooded for on week and manganese in the leaves immediately doubled, decreasing the plant growth. Seven weeks after draining, trifoliolates that developed immediately after flooding were still high in manganese while the manganese concentration in the youngest trifoliolates was similar to that found in the leaves of the unflooded plants. This reflects the immobility of manganese in the plant. The addition of silicon improved slightly the appearance of Hill soybeans at toxic levels of manganese, but failed to improve growth. Susceptibility of soybean cultivars to both manganese deficiency ...
