Book Description
A self-contained text reviewing tropical limnology. Discusses a number of communities in detail, including plankton, benthic regions, and the water margins. Introduces the characteristic types and assemblies of animals and plants from tropical communities. The measurement and relative magnitude of such quantifiable aspects as abundance, biomass, primary production, secondary production, and decomposition are all outlined, drawing together the diverse threads of freshwater ecology over one of the earth's climatic belts. Deals with use and abuse of water in the tropics and looks at problems of diversity and diversification in tropical waters.

Book Description
Tropical Stream Ecology describes the main features of tropical streams and their ecology. It covers the major physico-chemical features, important processes such as primary production and organic-matter transformation, as well as the main groups of consumers: invertebrates, fishes and other vertebrates. Information on concepts and paradigms developed in north-temperate latitudes and how they do not match the reality of ecosystems further south is expertly addressed. The pressing matter of conservation of tropical streams and their biodiversity is included in almost every chapter, with a final chapter providing a synthesis on conservation issues. For the first time, Tropical Stream Ecology places an important emphasis on viewing research carried out in contributions from international literature. - First synthetic account of the ecology of all types of tropical streams - Covers all of the major tropical regions - Detailed consideration of possible fundamental differences between tropical and temperate stream ecosystems - Threats faced by tropical stream ecosystems and possible conservation actions - Descriptions and synstheses life-histories and breeding patterns of major aquatic consumers (fishes, invertebrates)

Book Description
This established textbook continues to provide a comprehensive andstimulating introduction to rivers, lakes and wetlands, and waswritten as the basis for a complete course on freshwater ecology.Designed for undergraduate and early postgraduate students who wishto gain an overall view of this vast subject area, this accessibleguide to freshwater ecosystems and man's activities will also beinvaluable to anyone interested in the integrated management offreshwaters. The author maintains the tradition of clarity andconciseness set by previous editions, and the text is extensivelyillustrated with photographs and diagrams. Examples are drawn fromthe author's experience in many parts of the world. In this edition, the scientific content of the text has beenfully revised and updated. Emphasis has been placed on humanimpacts, and a completely new chapter has been added on the futureof freshwaters. Balanced and stimulating introduction to limnology. Successfully combines fundamental and applied aspects ofintegrated management of freshwaters, with strong emphasis on humanlinks. Completely revised and rewritten with a threefold increase inthe number of illustrations. New chapter on the future of freshwaters. Of interest to undergraduates, beginning postgraduates and anylimnologically interested reader.

Book Description
In 1971 the International Society of Tropical Ecology and the International Association for Ecology held a meeting on Tropical Ecology, with an emphasis on organic production in New Delhi, India. At this meeting a Working Group on Tropical Ecology was organized, consisting of K. C. Misra (India), F. Malaisse (Zaire), E. Medina (Venezuela) and F. Golley (U.S.A.). The object of this Working Group was to stimulate interaction between tropical ecologists through future scientific meetings and other exchanges and communications. A second meeting of ISTE and INTECOL was held in Caracas, Venezuela in 1973, under the direction of Medina and Golley and sponsored by the Depart ment of Ecology, Institute Venezolano Investigaciones Cientificas (lVIC). The basic structure of the meeting was provided by series of invited papers which considered topics of special interest from both an applied and theoretical view. These included physiological ecology (Pannier), populations (Rabinovich), tropical savannas (Lamotte), rivers (Sioli), estuaries (Rodriguez), and island ecosystems (Mueller-Dombois). Contributed papers considered details of these and other ecological topics, including the application of ecology to human problems. The present volume includes the invited papers listed above and a sampling of contributed papers which together illustrate the trends of research in tropical ecology. The papers show that tropical ecology is a vigorous subject of research. While the papers in this volume do not provide reviews of all the topics of study in tropical ecology, they do present authoritative statements on progress in the major subject in the field.

Book Description
Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.
