The Ecological Life Zones of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
Author: John J. Ewel
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Forest ecology
Languages : en
Pages : 80
Book Description
Most of the neotropical nations except Mexico and Brazil are mapped according to the Holdridge system of ecological life zones. In order to have comparability with these areas, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were mapped and a discussion and a description of each life zone were written. The manuscript in English offers water balances, a description of the Holdridge theory of biotemperature, and greater detail in general. The shortened version in Spanish is intended as a field manual to be used with the map. Six life zones are present on these islands and are present also in South and Central America, representing large areas there. Research done on the islands will be directly applicable to those areas and conversely, successful practices done there will be applicable in corresponding life zones on the islands.

Author: J.A. Comiskey
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781850709640
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 798
Book Description
This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.
