This book sheds light on the structure of “a unity with diversity” developed in the Qing imperial formation (1636–1912) by a case study of the Qing-Tibetan encounters in the eighteenth century. By analyzing historical and ethnographical materials, the book investigates the translation of Chinese histories and stone inscriptions into Tibetan, the transformation of the landscapes at Mount Wutai and Lhasa, and the transplantation of Chinese deities and medical practices to Tibet. It demonstrates the processes in which the cosmopolitan interlocutors reified imperial integrity while expressing their diverse longings and belongings. It concludes that the Qing’s rule over its cultural others was neither simply Sinicizing nor colonizing, but a translational process in which multivocalic actors shared narratives, landscapes, and practices, while the emperor and tantric masters performed cosmic power over humans and metahumans. This book cuts across the fields of anthropology, history, Chinese Studies, and Tibetan Studies. It reflects on the concepts of sovereignty and ethnicity, and it also extends the methodological horizon of historical anthropology.

Essential Compendium for Buddhists: A Modern Buddhist Liturgy is a book on Buddhist rituals, which was edited by An Jinho 安震湖 (1880–1965) and Choe Chwiheo 崔就墟 (1865–?). This work represents the process of evolution of modern Buddhist rituals and concrete features of popularization and modernization of Buddhism. An Jinho, a scholar-monk who worked around Yecheon and Mun-gyeong of North Gyeongsang Province, dedicated himself to the translation and publication of Buddhist canonical texts by establishing the publishing institute Mansanghoe. He is also well known as the editor of Seongmun uibeom (Buddhist Ritual Manual, 1935), the compilation of traditional Buddhist rituals. Choe Chwiheo is also a scholar-monk who worked in North Gyeongsang Province, and participated in the Mind-field Development Movement, a movement in the middle and late 1930s to educate people common people that simultaneously promoted agriculture in the countryside. Essential Compendium for Buddhists: A Modern Buddhist Liturgy is a collection that describes various Buddhist chanting or worship ceremonies. This book was reviewed by the Buddhist scholars Gwon Sangno and Gim Taeheup, and Han Yongun sponsored the publication. The main body is comprised of abbreviated excerpts from various Buddhist ceremonial texts along with additional explanations in the Korean language. This work encompasses the traditional process of Buddhist rituals and regular ceremonies along with verses, ritual prayers, precepts, and entreaties on the one hand, and reflects Buddhist efforts toward modernization in the process of its adaptation to the new age on the other. As an essential guide to Korean Buddhist rituals and ceremonies, this book was used as an indispensable manual for temple ceremonies and daily Buddhist events. This book traces a most obscure and yet most intriguing theme concealed in Heidegger’s thinking and work, which has hitherto not yet been made the focus of a thorough and sustained investigation: that is, the emergence and course of Heidegger’s interest in East Asian thought and of his reflection on East-West dialogue. The second volume of a celebrated translation of the classic Chinese novel This is the second volume in David Roy's celebrated translation of one of the most famous and important novels in Chinese literature. The Plum in the Golden Vase or, Chin P’ing Mei is an anonymous sixteenth-century work that focuses on the domestic life of Hsi-men Ch’ing, a corrupt, upwardly mobile merchant in a provincial town, who maintains a harem of six wives and concubines. The novel, known primarily for its erotic realism, is also a landmark in the development of the narrative art form—not only from a specifically Chinese perspective but in a world-historical context. With the possible exception of The Tale of Genji (1010) and Don Quixote (1615), there is no earlier work of prose fiction of equal sophistication in world literature. Although its importance in the history of Chinese narrative has long been recognized, the technical virtuosity of the author, which is more reminiscent of the Dickens of Bleak House, the Joyce of Ulysses, or the Nabokov of Lolita than anything in the earlier Chinese fiction tradition, has not yet received adequate recognition. This is partly because all of the existing European translations are either abridged or based on an inferior recension of the text. This translation and its annotation aim to faithfully represent and elucidate all the rhetorical features of the original in its most authentic form and thereby enable the Western reader to appreciate this Chinese masterpiece at its true worth.
