Book Description
Excerpt from The Dominican Revival in the Nineteenth Century: Being Some Account of the Restoration of the Order of Preachers Throughout, the World Under Fr; Jandel the Seventy-Third Master-General In his early days as a Catholic, Newman may well have asked, as he actually did in a letter to Dalgairns in July 1846, whether the Dominican Order was not "a great idea extinct." With reference also to the fasts and abstinence enjoined by the rule of that Order, he said definitely: Nous avons change tout cela. Newman indeed may well have thought so then, for Alexander Vincent Jandel had not yet been appointed by Divine Providence to prove to the world that things had not really changed so much: to prove that now, if ever, there is need in the Church of an Order wedded to truth and austerity - an Order of men whose minds should be devoted to prayer and study with a view to preaching, and whose bodies should be kept in subjection as far as possible by fasting, abstinence, and vigils. Yet in Jandel himself there was little or nothing of the "primitive man" of Francis Thompson. "The old asceticism" can hardly have appealed very strongly to one who had so little "lustiness of the body." Book Description
The Dominicans in the Americas and the Philippines (c. 1500–c. 1820) is part of a renewal of interest in the global history of the Dominican Order. Many of the essays were carefully selected among some of the papers presented at the III International Conference on the History of the Order of Preachers in the Americas, a gathering that stands in continuity with the conferences of Mexico (2013) and Bogotá (2016). This book, the contributors of which are active researchers specializing in the history of the Order of Preachers in Latin America, is organized in four parts: Women and the Order of Preachers; “Benditos Bienes”: Libraries and Material Patrimony; Missions, Devotional, and Daily Life; and The Order of Preachers and Their Writings. Contributions deal with different subfields including art history, gender studies, history of the book, and intellectual history more broadly. Additionally, it contains a chapter examining the historiography of the Order of Preachers in Latin America. Covering the time range from 1510 to the early nineteenth century, the book fills a gap in the historiography of the Order of Preachers in the Americas, especially in English-language scholarly literature. Students of Latin American history, the history of Christianity, and the history of global Catholicism will surely find the volume to be of great interest.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Dominican Order and Convocation: A Study of the Growth of Representation in the Church During the Thirteenth Century I should explain that this study was originally intended for a brief article. As I worked upon it, it outgrew the limits of my original intention, and-ceasing to be a brief article almost grew into a small book. I have published it as it stands (though I would gladly have carried further some lines of inquiry which are here merely suggested), because other engagements prevent me from devoting myself to the subject for some time to come, and because I thought that such results as I had attained might possibly be of some immediate use to students of the history of institutions.
