Book Description
The Transactions XXVIIA Reports on Astronomy 2006-2009 provides a comprehensive and authoritative review of what has been achieved in astronomy during the years 2006 to 2009. These insightful and up-to-date reviews have been written by the presidents and chairpersons of the IAU scientific bodies: the Divisions, the Commissions, and the Working Groups. Topics covered in this wide-ranging volume include: fundamental astronomy; the Sun and heliosphere; planetary sciences; stars; variable stars; interstellar matter; the Galactic system; galaxies and the Universe; optical and infrared techniques; radio astronomy; space and high-energy astrophysics; and other IAU activities. The reviews have been written at a level suitable for colleagues in the same fields, but will also be useful for students and researchers wishing to gain an overview of astronomical fields beyond their own research area.

Book Description
Contrary to what is suggested in media and popular discourses, Europe is neither a monolithic entity nor simply a collection of nation states. It is, rather, a union of millions of individuals who differ from one another in a variety of ways while also sharing many characteristics associated with their ethnic, social, political, economic, religious or national characteristics. This book explores differences and similarities that exist in attitudes, beliefs and opinions on a range of issues across Europe. Drawing on the extensive data of the European Social Survey, it presents insightful analyses of social attitudes, organised around the themes of religious identity, political identity, family identity and social identity, together with a section on methodological issues. A collection of rigorously analysed studies on national, comparative and pan-European levels, Values and Identities in Europe offers insight into the heart and soul of Europe at a time of unprecedented change. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in social attitudes, social change in Europe, demographics and survey methods.

Book Description
Both Descartes prizes honour the name of one of Europe's greatest scientific thinkers, René Descartes. A pioneer of the age of reason, a philosopher, mathematician and scientist, Descartes' legacy includes such works as Meditations on first philosophy which is best remembered for containing the statement cogito, ergo sum-'I think, therefore I am'. « Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison et chercher la vérité dans les sciences » is among his other works. Born in France, Descartes travelled across Europe. Between 1620 and 1628, he spent time in Hungary, Germany, Italy and France. Descartes corresponded widely and was one of the first to put forward the idea of a universal language through which people of different nationalities could exchange ideas. The prize that bears his name acknowledges that science is rarely the preserve of a single brilliant mind in a single country. The sharking of ideas and equipment yields a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Descartes' willingness to share his ideas and explore fruitful relationships with his peers around Europe is a poignant metaphor for what the European Commission is trying to achieve with the Descartes prize. The competition aims to identify and showcase the best European research, as well as the best way to communicate science to the public. It also raises awareness of the benefits of transnational research, and of working together to achieve ambitious scientific goals at European level.
