Book Description
Excerpt from The Decline and Fall of Napoleon When the proposal for a series of republications in book form of some of the more important articles and short stories appearing in the pages of the Pall Mall Magazine was first made to us by Mr. R. B. Marston, we accepted it without hesitation, perceiving at once that an admirable medium would thus be provided by which much valuable literary matter might be made known to an even wider circle of the public than the readers of the periodical of which we have the conduct. Field-Marshal Viscount Wolseley's graphic, and analytical papers on the "Decline and Fall of Napoleon," which constitute this, the first volume of the Pall Mall Magazine Library, achieved, as we are able to say from personal knowledge, a very remarkable success not only in England and America, but on the Continent; especially in Paris, where they were translated and published in book form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from Fall of Napoleon Duced so far as they are necessary for clearness. A vast amount of Napoleonic literature has been published during the last ten or fifteen years, and with the greater part of that literature the present writer claims to be acquainted. The result of this has been not only to bring to light many facts which were previously unknown, but to modify in many respects the judgments passed upon N apoleon's actions by competent historians. For instance, no action of Napoleon has been more universally con demmed than his refusal to accept terms of peace during the armistice of 1813, but the analysis of the policy of Metternich made by M. Albert Sorel in his last published volume has shown that it would have been impossible for Napoleon to have acted otherwise. It is believed that the result of these researches now finds place for the first time in an English book, and the View of Napoleon's character and conduct, which is rather indicated in these pages than positively stated, is different to that generally held by English historians. For reasons which have been thought sufficient, the pages of this book have not been burdened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Until now, there has been no study of the significant errors that Napoleon made himself which, though apparently trivial at the time, proved to be major factors in his downfall. Digby Smith tracks his rise to power, his stewardship of France from 1804–15, and his exile. He highlights his military mistakes, such as his unwillingness to appoint an effective overall supremo in the Iberian Peninsula, and the decision to invade Russia while the Spanish situation was spiralling out of control.

Book Description
The Napoleon in power in later years may have lacked the absolute genius and resolution that his earlier campaigns displayed; however, he was more than a match for his enemies on more than one occasion. Field-Marshal Wolseley’s short biography of Wellington begins in 1812, following the travails of Napoleon as he and the few survivors of the La Grande Armée trudged back from the Russian snows. As Napoleon feverishly combs depots for recruits, and conscripts more men for his army, he takes the fight to the Allies in Germany. But outnumbered, and demanding the impossible from his generals and troops, he is heavily defeated by the Allied forces. Pushed back to the borders of France, Napoleon contrives his finest campaign since the early Italian campaigns that gained him his fame. However, the number of allied forces eventually pushed him back, forcing his abdication and banishment to Elba. In the final throw of the dice, Napoleon returns to France and, despite some of his finest manoeuvring, is finally defeated at the battle of Waterloo. “An admirable monograph, by the new Commander-in-Chief of the Forces,...giving in a crisp resume the last half of the career of Napoleon, ... Limited by space, there is yet a well-digested mass within these covers, clearly collated and tersely expressed...”-Theodore Aryault Dodge

Book Description
Excerpt from The Fall of Napoleon, Vol. 2: An Historical Memoir It has pleased historians to describe the parting of Duroc and Napoleon as extremely a 'ecting. This is not yet the place to sum up the character of the French Emperor; but though we willingly grant that the inti macies contracted amid the toils, dangers, and vicissi tudes of war, are more likely to take a firm hold on the feelings which go towards the formation of friendship, than any which can arise under other circumstances, we are not prepared to allow that Napoleon could enter tain a disinterested attachment for any one. Nor will the deep af iction which historians tell us he evinced on the occasion of Duroc's death, tend to alter our opinion because the writers who have described his behaviour differ so widely from each other, as to render it very evident that some must have drawn principally from their own imagination. We are told, that for the rest of the day Napoleon remained in front of his tent, sur rounded by his Guards, who pitied their Emperor, as if he had lost one of his children. On no other occasion was he observed to be so much exhausted, or absorbed by grief, as to decline listening to military details or giving military orders. Book Description
Excerpt from The Fall of Napoleon, Vol. 1: An Historical Memoir We are as conscious as any can be, that no history written by merely mortal bands will be entirely free from error but independently of the number of errors which may render any work unworthy of credit, there are some errors of a character which must always produce that effect, even when less numerous than in the work of which we are Speaking. Passing over the want of knowledge M. Thiers displays of English institutions, of English character, manners, and feelings, we proceed at once to a statement of facts, sufficient, we hope, to establish the severe censure here passed upon his work.
