The #1 New York Times–bestselling author introduces readers to “a great detective, a detective’s detective,” New York cop Edward X. Delaney (Kirkus Reviews). New York Police Department Captain Edward Delaney is called to the scene of a brutal murder. A Brooklyn councilman was struck from behind, the back of his skull punctured and crushed with an unknown weapon. The victim wasn’t robbed, and there’s no known motive. The commissioner appoints Delaney to head up a clandestine task force, but soon this effort ignites an internecine war of departmental backstabbing. Distracted by the serious illness of his wife, Barbara, Delaney begins his secret investigation. Then the killer claims another victim—slain in the exact same way, leaving the strange puncture wound. As more young men are found murdered, Delaney starts putting the pieces together. Soon, he’s faced with a cop’s dilemma: He knows who the killer is, but the man is untouchable. That’s when Delaney lays a trap to bring a monster to justice . . .

Book Description
This story is historical fiction about the city of Waco, Texas, Baylor University, and some of the Baptists and folks of the town during the latter years of the 19th Century. Most of the characters are loosely based on real people that lived at the time but are exaggerated and extrapolated to develop the story. Not everything was peaceful serenity in this small town located on the Brazos River on the cusp of the 20th Century. People held grudges and had axes to grind for real or perceived wrongdoings between such characters as William Cowper Brann a semi-famous local newspaper writer, the Carroll Brothers who ran the Baptist religion in the state, and the mayor of Waco, J.W. Riggins. Red, the primary narrator falls in love with Inez Brann, the daughter of William Cowper Brann, the city’s primary antagonist of the story. Red is heartbroken at their truncated relationship. As the story progresses, the history of the city including the devastating F5 tornado that struck the city in 1953, plays a critical part in a love story and quite possibly subsequent tragedies that have repeatedly struck the city over the years.

Tekna' Aban Balan is a great love story told in the poetic form in the Kayan language. It is the story of Balan Lejau, an aristocrat whose beautiful second wife was kidnapped by two people from another world because of her great beauty. Now a widower a second time, Balan Lejau became very depressed at not being able to bury his dead and refused to eat until he became emaciated with sunken eyes. After being told she was still alive however in another world, he recovered his strength and set about to recover her. He made a magical ladder from blow pipe darts to reach the sky. As a high ranking aristocrat who Kayans believed are descended from the spirit world as described in their story of the Tree of Life, he was able to enter to search for her. He overcame several challenges he never encountered on earth and seduced all the wives of the warriors that had left them to tend to their farms. The story ended with a fierce battle between Balan Lejau and the two men that had kidnapped his wife. He defeated them both and brought back their heads back as trophy to his longhouse.
