Book Description
Excerpt from The French Renaissance It is very difficult, if not impossible, to detect the first manifestations of any intellectual movement. There were premonitions of the French Renaissance as far back as the days of Philip Vi.(1328-1349), the first prince of the Valois line, but these early blossoms were blighted before they had time to bear fruit, by the era of foreign conquest, civil war, and anarchy which began early in the fifteenth century, and it is customary and convenient to take the expedition of Charles VIII. to Italy in 1494 as marking the real beginning of the French Renaissance. We may even go further and, for the purpose of historical study, divide the whole movement into four sub-periods, terminating respectively at the death of Louis Xii.(1515), the death of Francis I.(1547), the Massacre of St. Bartholomew(1572), and the peace of Vervins (1598). Book Description
Excerpt from The Literature of the French Renaissance, Vol. 1 N 1885 I published as a prologue to a larger work an Introductory Essay', which purported to give a brief summary of the condition of learning and literature in France at the close of the Middle Ages, and to trace the first workings of the Renaissance spirit down to the opening of the reign of Francis I. The First Part of the main history was nearly completed by the beginning of 1890, when ill health added to the claims of other work compelled me practically to lay it aside. It was not until five years ago that I was able to take it up again in more than a desultory fashion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Century of the Renaissance For the keener enjoyment of life there is no pursuit so profitable and so easy as the familiar study of French history. It does not require that special education which enables the few to find consolation at times of trouble in the ancient classics, where Greek tragedy makes sublime the depths of human woe, or where the brighter scepticism of Horace dispels for a sunny hour the darkest clouds of dejection. Apart from such favoured amateurs of distraction there are very many cultivated English people who, in their desultory or regular reading, like to understand allusions, and who have a sense of missed enjoyment when a name of place or person conveys to them no distinct idea. To comprehend every allusion met with in general literature and to recognize every name would need, if not the whole sum of human knowledge, at least a portion so large that it would be more conveniently lodged in an encyclopaedia than in the memory of man or woman. But it is astonishing what an extensive and enlivening light is thrown on ordinary reading by a knowledge of the history of France. This has always been the experience of English readers in their perusal of fiction and of memoirs, of political and of philosophical works. It is more than ever apparent in the present war-time, when every morning brings a list of places in France where things have happened, which when details arc known, may for ever after be associated in many a British home with proud sorrow or pathetic rejoicing. The part of France which is now the scene of war is a relatively small tract of that country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Literature of the French Renaissance: An Introductory Essay There are few periods of literature that seem to lend themselves better to historical treatment than that of the French Renaissance. Though it is illustrated by two of the greatest names on the roll of French literature, Rabelais and Montaigne, the general aspect that it presents to us is the record rather of a great national literary movement than of individual men of letters. Moreover this move ment was a faithful reflexion of a corresponding change in the whole social and intellectual life of the people. At all times I believe the literature of a nation to be more or less of an index to its moral and intellectual state. It is especially so in times of great stress and fermentation. It was preeminently so in the time of the Renaissance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
