Book Description
From the self-styled 'Queen of Soho' who sued BA, claiming to have been bitten on the bottom by a flea, to the butcher's daughter from Oldham who performed topless as 'the world's strongest woman' before becoming becoming the mistress of a peer whom she met while living in a Pyrennean mountain hut, this is a celebration of the women who refused to fulfil society's expectations. Their company includes the woman who survived four months adrift in a dinghy in the Pacific and the woman who played professional polo disguised as a man for fifteen years, as well as the inimitable Dame Barbara Cartland and Fanny Cradock. And there are over one hundred more. This is the first time that the Daily Telegraph has dedicated a book to women's stories; very few of the women featured were 'celebrities', yet their stories represent a century of progress and change, capturing the spirit of those who came of age between Emancipation and the Equal Opportunities Act, whether high life or low life, pioneers or bluestockings. Taking its title from the inspiring lines of a matron whose nurses faced a WWII firing squad, this is a fascinating portrayal of unforgettable and extraordinary characters united by their refusal to accept society's constraints.

Book Description
In the seventeen years since The Daily Telegraph started to take its obituaries seriously by allotting them a special section in the paper, it has published around 1,000 obituaries of soldiers, as well as almost equal numbers of sailors and airmen. The 100 to be found here, which have never before been collected in book form, were chosen to show the widest range of military experience. They include those who performed astonishing acts of bravery, such as the New Zealander Charles Upham, who won the Victoria Cross twice in Crete and North Africa, the commando leader "Mad Jack" Churchill and Drum Major Buss, the bugler who rallied the Glosters at the Imjin River in Korea. Among the senior figures are General Mazek, who commanded the Poles in Normandy, the rigorous Field Marshal Lord Carver and General Sir Walter Walker, who won three DSOs.

Book Description
Colditz Castle was one of the most famous Prisoner of War camps of the Second World War. It was there that the Germans interred their most troublesome or important prisoners. It made sense, the Germans believed, to place the most troublesome Allied prisoners in one place where they could be carefully watched and guarded. The place that was selected was the notorious Schloss Colditz deep in eastern Germany.During the First World War Schloss Colditz became a hospital and when the Nazis came to power in the 1930s it became a political prison. With the need for a high security prisoner of war facility following the outbreak of war in 1939, Schloss Colditz became Offizierslager, or Oflag IV-C.In reality, the decision to confine these inveterate escapers in one place ensured that Colditz was turned into a hotbed of industry and invention. Though the castle was built on an outcrop of rock, with a sheer drop of 250 yards down to the River Mulde, and the fact that Colditz was 400 miles from any frontier not under German control, the prisoners began escape planning from almost the day they first arrived - and they continued to do so throughout the months and years that followed, becoming ever more daring and ingenious. Tunnelling, impersonation, disguise, bribery of guards, forgery of documents and trickery of all kinds were the order of the day.By the time that Oflag IV-C was liberated in 1945, some thirty prisoners had made successful 'home runs', escaping back to Allied or neutral territory. There were also countless failed attempts, some of which were quite brilliant in their conception. The most remarkable of these was the plan to build a glider and fly over the walls to freedom - perhaps the most ambitious and extraordinary escape story of all time. This unique collection of obituaries from the pages of The Telegraph present a fascinating insight into some of those held captive in Schloss Colditz.

Book Description
The obituary pages of our quality newspapers have been described as 'oases of calm in a world gone mad', 'a lovely part of the paper to linger in', and 'writing that matters'. Entertaining, inspiring and informative, they serve as a legitimate instrument of history, and have enjoyed an extraordinary revival in popularity over the past twenty years. Life After Death investigates-and celebrates-the development of the obituary form in the British, American, and Australian press. Author Nigel Starck tracks down the earliest exercise in obituary publication (in 1622), then traces the evolution of the form over four centuries, from times when the obituary was the reserve of royalty and privilege to its contemporary egalitarian mode. Along the way Dr Starck delves into a multitude of lives, from the heroic to the comic, the saintly to the downright villainous, the exemplary to the eccentric. Meet, in the posthumous cast list, Major Digby Tatham-Warter, of Britain's Parachute Regiment, who carried an umbrella into battle just in case it rained; the absent-minded Australian barrister Pat Lanigan, who drove from Canberra to Sydney and then flew back, leaving his car behind; and the eccentric American publisher Eddie Clontz, whose newspaper reported (exclusively, of course) that 'tiny terrorists' were disguising themselves as garden gnomes. Life After Death also incorporates a connoisseur's collection of ten obituaries reprinted in full: the subjects include Helen Keller, Diana Mosley, Quentin Crisp, George Wallace, and Rosa Parks. Without doubt, Life After Death is a book that will outlive its author-as an enduring celebration of journalism's dying art. 'Canon Smith expired after suffering an unfortunate disagreement with his bishop.'-The Sydney Morning Herald, 1882 'Minnesota Fats died at his home in Nashville. He was eighty-two, or perhaps ninety-five.'-The New York Times, 1996
