The Cytoplasm of Hepatocytes during Carcinogenesis
Author: Peter Bannasch
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783540043089
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
The transformation of a normal cell into a cancer cell is not a sudden but a slow continuous process which may take years. A systematic study of the morphological and structural changes that take place during this cellular transformation has only become possible since methods were developed to induce a high incidence of tumors in experimental animals. The growth of such tumors can be followed during all stages of their development. For several reasons, rat liver has proved to be particularly suitable. For more than thirty years it has been known that one can induce tumors in rat liver experimentally with many different substances. The azo dyes which were used originally (YOSHIDA, 1932; KINOSITA, 1937) have since been replaced by more potent carcinogens. The recently discovered nitrosamines, dimethylnitrosamine (MAGEE and BARNES, 1956), diethylnitrosamine (SCHMAHL et aI. , 1960) and N-nitrosomorpholine (DRUCKREY et aI. , 1961) should be mentioned in this context. Used in the proper dose, these carcinogens lead within a few months to the formation of multicentric hepatomas in practically 100 Ufo of the experimental animals, and are therefore a very useful tool for studies of the cytogenesis of cancer (see BUCHNER, 1961; GRUND MANN, 1961; GRUNDMANN and SIEBURG, 1962; OEHLERT and HARTJE, 1963; BAN NASCH and MULLER, 1964). The liver parenchyma as such offers a very big technical advantage because it consists of a rather homogenous cell population.

Liver Carcinogenesis
Author: George G. Skouteris
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642792154
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 489
Book Description
During the last years much attention has been given to the investigation of the roles of specific growth modulators acting on liver cell populations. HGF functions as a pleotropic factor in the liver as well as in other extrahepatic tissues. The hepatic stem cell compartment is thought to play a major role in liver tissue restoration. Mechanisms of cell growth and cell death of the liver are described in detail, with particular emphasis on apoptosis. The functions of HBV-pX protein and the roles of hepatitis B virus gene expression relation to hepatocellular carcinoma are discussed. Techniques for obtaining human and nonhuman hepatocytes and other liver cell types and for efficient transfer and expression of genes in hepatocytes and liver-derived cell lines are presented.

The Role of Cell Types in Hepatocarcinogenesis
Author: Alphonse E. Sirica
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849347467
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 380
Book Description
The Role of Cell Types in Hepatocarcinogenesis provides the first comprehensive, review and analysis of cell precursor relationships believed to be important in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and other types of nonmesenchymal liver tumors. The book focuses on cell lineages in liver development and neoplastic formation in both experimental animal models and humans. It also critically reviews current information supporting the existence of a "facultative liver stem cell" and its potential role as an alternative cell of origin in the genesis of various hepatic neoplasms, including hepatocellular carcinoma. Other significant topics covered include cellular and viral oncogenes, p53 gene and growth factors in hepatocarcinogenesis, and the use of newly developed transgenic animal and cell culture models designed for investigating the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Numerous figures and tables illustrate difficult concepts, and an extensive listing of references is included. The Role of Cell Types in Hepatocarcinogenesis is a practical reference volume that basic and clinical researchers in liver carcinogenesis, development, and differentiation will find useful in their day-to-day work.

Liver Regeneration and Carcinogenesis
Author: Bozzano G Luisa
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080535542
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 427
Book Description
Because of its marked capacity to regenerate and the ability of chemical carcinogens and viruses to ready transform hepatocytes, the liver has been used extensively as a model for investigating the molecular mechanisms of cellular proliferation and carcinogenesis. Recently, striking advances have occured in the understanding of hepatocyte growth regulation and the manner in which chemical agents and viruses alter these normal growth regulatory pathways in liver carcinogenesis. This explosion of information has occured in a multitude of researh disciplines. This book brings together current findings in a coherent manner, from a molecular point of view. Three sections cover in detail the areas of liver regeneration, liver carcinogenesis, and liver tumor therapy. The contributors are pioneers and leaders in this field. * Logical organization of material in three detailed and comprehensive sections: liver regeneration, liver carcinogenesis, and liver tumor treatment * Contributors are pioneers and leaders in the field * There are currently no books on this subject on the market * Research focus is at the molecular level

Cancer as a Metabolic Disease
Author: Thomas Seyfried
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118310306
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 482
Book Description
The book addresses controversies related to the origins of cancer and provides solutions to cancer management and prevention. It expands upon Otto Warburg's well-known theory that all cancer is a disease of energy metabolism. However, Warburg did not link his theory to the "hallmarks of cancer" and thus his theory was discredited. This book aims to provide evidence, through case studies, that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease requring metabolic solutions for its management and prevention. Support for this position is derived from critical assessment of current cancer theories. Brain cancer case studies are presented as a proof of principle for metabolic solutions to disease management, but similarities are drawn to other types of cancer, including breast and colon, due to the same cellular mutations that they demonstrate.
