Book Description
Excerpt from The Culture of Citrus Fruits Under the Climatic and Geographical Conditions Pertaining to the Murray Valley During the expansion of the citrus industry that has within recent years taken place along the Murray Valley the absence of any book of a general nature dealing with the culture of citrus fruits under local conditions has often been a considerable handicap to new growers in the laying out and management of their plantations. It is with the object of attempting to remedy this disability that this work is published, and it is the author's hope that new and prospective citrus growers may find the information herein contained of some use to them. A considerable portion of the subject matter contained in the following pages has been taken from the author's previous works - from a pamphlet entitled Orange Culture, published in 1914, and from Fruitgrowing under Irrigation, published in 1918. The whole of such extracts from these works as are herein incorporated have been revised, two new chapters have been added, and an endeavor made to present the subject to the reader in a plain and concise form. Book Description
Excerpt from Fruit-Growing Under Irrigation Under the Climatic and Geographical Conditions Pertaining to the Murray Valley The absence of any Australian work of a general nature dealing with the subject of fruitgrowing under irrigation is the author's apology for placing this work before the public. Much of the subject matter of some of the chapters herein dealt with appeared in the form of articles written by the author during the past four years, which were printed in the pages of the Murray Pioneer. It is the author's hope that the following pages may be of some service as a guide to prospective irrigationists or to settlers new to irrigation enterprise, in helping them to acquire the chief principles of Australian irrigation practice, and thus to enable them to avoid the mistakes made by many of the older irrigationists, who, for want of information upon this subject, had often to acquire their irrigation knowledge as the result of painful and costly experience. It also covers the Marine Corps participation in the advisory effort, the operations of the two Special Landing Forces of the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet, and the services of Marines with the staff of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. Book Description
This book documents frontier knowledge on the drivers of agriculture productivity to derive pragmatic policy advice for governments and development partners on reducing poverty and boosting shared prosperity. The analysis describes global trends and long-term sources of total factor productivity growth, along with broad trends in partial factor productivity for land and labor, revisiting the question of scale economies in farming. Technology is central to growth in agricultural productivity, yet across many parts of the developing world, readily available technology is never taken up. We investigate demand-side constraints of the technology equation to analyze factors that might influence producers, particularly poor producers, to adopt modern technology. Agriculture and food systems are rapidly transforming, characterized by shifting food preferences, the rise and growing sophistication of value chains, the increasing globalization of agriculture, and the expanding role of the public and private sectors in bringing about efficient and more rapid productivity growth. In light of this transformation, the analysis focuses on the supply side of the technology equation, exploring how the enabling environment and regulations related to trade and intellectual property rights stimulate Research and Development to raise productivity. The book also discusses emerging developments in modern value chains that contribute to rising productivity. This book is the fourth volume of the World Bank Productivity Project, which seeks to bring frontier thinking on the measurement and determinants of productivity to global policy makers.
