Critics frequently describe the influence of "America," through Hollywood and other cultural industries, as a form of cultural imperialism. This unidirectional model of interaction does not address, however, the counter-flows of Chinese-language films into the American film market or the influence of Chinese filmmakers, film stars, and aesthetics in Hollywood. The aim of this collection is to (re)consider the complex dynamics of transnational cultural flows between American and Chinese-language film industries. The goal is to bring a more historical perspective to the subject, focusing as much on the Hollywood influence on early Shanghai or postwar Hong Kong films as on the intensifying flows between American and Chinese-language cinemas in recent decades. This dissertation investigates different types of immigrant representations in Sinophone cinema, including both inter-Asia representations and relationships with the world. The research analyzes the way in which immigrant cinematic representation intervenes with the issue of national identity in Sinophone communities, primarily during 2000-2020. My primary focus is on the way cinema as a medium represents immigrants, reshapes the imagination about these immigrants, and also the way this process interacts with nation and society. The title of the dissertation "Identities in Motion" reflects the way identities shift in a rapidly changing world. The research explicates our understanding of Asian studies through contemplation of immigrant representations' mobility and immobility. Seen in this light, I consider not only the heterogeneous aspects of Asia, but also the connections between different locations in Asia and the world.This dissertation focuses on four different immigrant articulations. To place each Sinophone immigrant cinema as a site of complex cultural practices, my dissertation shows how cinema as a medium presents immigrants from different perspectives. Each of these four cases I select has unique contexts but all together posits questions about the concept of nations, identities, and the existing discrimination against immigrant groups. The first chapter examines two films: Ho Wi Ding's Pinoy Sunday (2009) and Tseng Ying-ting's Ye-Zai (2012), presenting the groups of "migrant workers" (waiji yigong) in Taiwan. The second chapter examines Cheng Yu-Chieh's My Little Honey Moon (2012), a film that centers on the subject of new immigrant women which challenges the conventional Xiangtu (nativist) concept. This chapter rethinks Xiangtu in a transnational relationship between Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Chapter three examines Midi Z's filmmaking, which highlights a special visualization of Sinophone Burma's landscape in providing precious viewpoints for the world to understand Sinophone Burmese. Chapter four focuses on the spatiality depicted within The Receptionist (2017) and attends to the ways in which this film explores how female immigrants interact with the spatiality as they navigate London. Through the analysis of these films, this dissertation contributes to the developing category of immigrant cinemas and generates an opportunity to rethink the issues of nation, gender, and identities.

Responding to a lack of studies on the film festival’s role in the production of cultural memory, this book explores different parameters through which film festivals shape our reception and memories of films. By focusing on two Asian American film festivals, this book analyzes the frames of memory that festivals create for their films, constructed through and circulated by the various festival media. It further establishes that festival locations—both cities and screening venues—play a significant role in shaping our experience of films. Finally, it shows that festivals produce performances which help guide audiences towards certain readings and direct the film’s role as a memory object. Bringing together film festival studies and memory studies, 'Asian American Film Festivals' offers a mixed-methods approach with which to explore the film festival phenomenon, thus shedding light on the complex dynamics of frames, locations, and performances shaping the festival’s memory practices. It also draws attention to the understudied genre of Asian American film festivals, showing how these festivals actively engage in constructing and performing a minority group’s collective identity and memory.

In the media, migrants are often portrayed as criminals; they are frequently dehumanized, marginalized, and unable to share their experiences. Telling Migrant Stories explores how contemporary documentary film gives voice to Latin American immigrants whose stories would not otherwise be heard. The essays in the first part of the volume consider the documentary as a medium for Latin American immigrants to share their thoughts and experiences on migration, border crossings, displacement, and identity. Contributors analyze films including Harvest of Empire, Sin país, The Vigil, De nadie, Operation Peter Pan: Flying Back to Cuba, Abuelos, La Churona, and Which Way Home, as well as internet documentaries distributed via platforms such as Vimeo and YouTube. They examine the ways these films highlight the individual agency of immigrants as well as the global systemic conditions that lead to mass migrations from Latin American countries to the United States and Europe. The second part of the volume features transcribed interviews with documentary filmmakers, including Luis Argueta, Jenny Alexander, Tin Dirdamal, Heidi Hassan, and María Cristina Carrillo Espinosa. They discuss the issues surrounding migration, challenges they faced in the filmmaking process, the impact their films have had, and their opinions on documentary film as a force of social change.
