Book Description
College professor and archaeologist Peter Harrigan and his dog Chance are enjoying an early morning hike in the western desert of the United States. As they begin to turn toward home, Harrigan encounters what, at first, seems to be a child alone in the wilderness being attacked by a coyote. This encounter ignites a chain of events that threatens the very existence of human life, and it involves the highest levels of power in Washington, D.C., and its allies, including their militaries, space agencies, and intelligence communities. In resolving this ever-expanding threat to civilization, Harrigan relies on many people in positions of absolute power and authorityfrom the President of the United States, to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the Secretary-General of the United Nationsto ensure the only possible solution can be successfully carried out, particularly when added threats suddenly present themselves. But first, he must convince them of the truth of what he encountered when taking that quiet hike in the desert. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of it all will be maintaining the utmost levels of security necessary to prevent uncontrollable worldwide panic from erupting.

Book Description
Probability has fascinated philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians for hundreds of years. Although the mathematics of probability is, for most applications, clear and uncontroversial, the interpretation of probability statements continues to be fraught with controversy and confusion. What does it mean to say that the probability of some event X occurring is 31%? In the 20th century a consensus emerged that there are at least two legitimate kinds of probability, and correspondingly at least two kinds of possible answers to this question of meaning. Subjective probability, also called 'credence' or 'degree of belief' is a numerical measure of the confidence of some person or some ideal rational agent. Objective probability, or chance, is a fact about how things are in the world. It is this second type of probability with which Carl Hoefer is concerned in this volume, specifically how we can understand the meaning of statements about objective probability. He aims to settle the question of what objective chances are, once and for all, with an account that can meet the demands of philosophers and scientists alike. For Hoefer, chances are constituted by patterns that can be discerned in the events that happen in our world. These patterns are ideally appropriate guides to what credences limited rational agents, such as ourselves, should have in situations of imperfect knowledge. By showing this, Hoefer bridges the gap between subjective probability and chance. In a field where few scholars have given adequate treatment to interpreting statements of chance, Hoefer develops a philosophically rich theory which draws on the disciplines of metaphysics, ontology, and philosophy of science.

Book Description
Alex Cavanaugh is used to fielding odd requests at her waitressing job. She would have never predicted, though, that she’d get brazenly propositioned for a one-night stand with a needy werewolf—or that she’d be lonely enough to tell him yes. Ben Swain’s inner wolf has been howling for him to take a permanent mate, but he’s terrified of change. He’s clawed his way to status and respect from his pack and doesn’t want to sacrifice that for anything. A short tryst while he’s visiting Maria, New Mexico, before the holidays is supposed to be a stopgap measure to keep his wolf hormones in check, but Ben’s animal side wants more of Alex. Although she’s a human, quirky Alex’s go-with-the-flow, practical personality perfectly complements Ben’s wild intensity. But after being burned by men before, her budding horticulture career has become her number one priority. Sure, she wants love, but she’d rather be alone than with someone who isn’t fully committed. If the two can’t figure out a way to balance the two most important things in their lives, all they’ll be getting for Christmas is regret. This story was first published by Crimson Romance/Simon & Schuster. This is a gently revised second edition.
