"The application of Bakhtin's critical theories to Gil Vicente has helped in understanding the genre and plot-compositional traits and sources of Vicente's drama. The focus is on Western Europe between the fall of the Roman Empire and the emergence of markedly Renaissance forms in Italy. This companion volume offers an introduction to European Portuguese literature for university-level readers.
