The a.: tre or hearth of a chimney (mss. Harl., 1129, Lambarde, in his Peramòulalz'on of Kent, cd. 1596, p. 562, says that this word was in his time nearly obsolete in Kent, but that it was retained in Shropshire and other parts.... Cf. F1. Cifre, anciently astra, A personal name of frequent occurrence in the Whitby and Guisborough Chartularies is del Estre, 01 del Hestre, 01 de Esturs or Estures, and it is worth passing notice that the person so named, whose name 0001118 most frequently, seems to be closely connected with the Middlesbrough district.
