History, Performance and Conservation
Author: Barry Bridgwood
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1134078994
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 450
Book Description
Ideal for students of architectural technology, this volume of the Technologies of Architecture series covers the technologies available and the processes necessary for the conservation of existing buildings and environments. This book provides, in a single text, the tools for students to be able to evaluate such buildings, as well as an extensive understanding of the mechanisms which cause their deterioration and knowledge of the technologies available to correct their status. The ever higher standards set for buildings, especially in energy conservation contexts, demand that practitioners appreciate how the performance of existing structures can be enhanced, which is also covered. Considering the work of conservation within a holistic perspective and historical context, this book is additionally invaluable for architecture and construction students.

Time Matter(s): Invention and Re-Imagination in Built Conservation
Author: Federica Goffi
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317010213
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
Even though the idea of altering an existing building is presently a well established practice within the context of adaptive reuse, when the building in question is a 'mnemonic building', of recognized heritage value, alterations are viewed with suspicion, even when change is a recognized necessity. This book fills in a blind spot in current architectural theory and practice, looking into a notion of conservation as a form of invention and imagination, offering the reader a counter-viewpoint to a predominant western understanding that preservation should be a 'still shot' from the past. Through a micro-historical study of a Renaissance concept of restoration, a theoretical framework to question the issue of conservation as a creative endeavor arises. It focuses on Tiberio Alfarano's 1571 ichnography of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, into which a complex body of religious, political, architectural and cultural elements is woven. By merging past and present temple's plans, he created a track-drawing questioning the design pursued after Michelangelo’s death (1564), opening the gaze towards other possible future imaginings. This book uncovers how the drawing was acted on by Carlo Maderno (1556-1629), who literally used it as physical substratum to for new design proposals, completing the renewal of the temple in 1626. Proposing a hybrid architectural-conservation approach, this study shows how these two practices can be merged in contemporary renovation. By creating hybrid drawings, the retrospective and prospective gaze of built conservation forms a continuous and contiguous reality, where a pre-existent condition engages with future design rejoining multiple temporalities within continuity of identity. This study might provide a paradigmatic and timely model to retune contemporary architectural sensibility when dealing with the dilemma between design and preservation when transforming a building of recognized significance.

Architectural Technology
Author: Stephen Emmitt
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1405147318
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 272
Book Description
This core textbook brings together for the first time the technical, legal, social and philosophical issues under the umbrella of architectural technology. Part 1 covers the influences that affect the way we build - the environmental agenda, the human factors, buildability, time and costs. Part 2 takes the reader through the life of a typical building project - from briefing, through design and assembly, to use and eventual disassembly. Part 3 tackles some of the underlying issues facing the architectural technologist - from the communication of details to technological innovation. Architectural Technolgy bridges the knowledge gap between design and construction, enabling the architectural technologist to apply their unique skill in a creative and innovative way. "As a textbook aimed at those studying for membership of BIAT this is clearly very thorough and has the recommendation of their Vice President Education. However, it can also justifiably earn its place on the bookshelf of anybody involved in the construction process as a reference and to aid an understanding of others he/she will be working with to develop an environment of which to be proud."
