Book Description
Excerpt from The Framing of the Constitution of the United States Nor is this intended to be a complete history. It is a brief presentation of the author's personal interpretation of what took place in the federal convention. It is merely a sketch in outline, the details of which each student must fill out according to his own needs. This book is founded upon the work the author has already referred to as edited by himself, The Records of the Federal Convention (new Haven, Yale University Press, 1911. 3 In the writing of it scarcely anything else has been used. The Records are so arranged as to render most of the citations easily found, and accordingly, with few exceptions, all footnote references have been omitted. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the Constitution of the United States The story of the Constitution is of truth stranger than fie tion. It is natural to attribute to an institution throughout its history that reputation which it bears in our own day. Many men are yet living who remember with startling dis tinctness a time when the Constitution seemed merely a piece of parchment; when the fate of the nation was as uncertain as the course of battle; when stern necessity compelled so liberal an interpretation of the supreme law of the land that states men refrained from forming conclusions on the tendency Of national administration, and, looking hopefully forward, sought new meanings in events where before they had sought interpretation by a construction Of words. Then, and not till then, in our history was the Constitution of the United States understood in its spirit as being the expression of the nation's mind, Whatever that mind might be. But no man now living can remember the angry days when the Constitu tion was yet a hope or a proposition debated between jealous States and still more jealous political leaders. NO one can re member the living opinions which, at the close of the eight eenth century, so nearly triumphed, and whose triumph would have dissolved a feeble union of States and encouraged the horrors of an anarchy only possible in a democracy. When the Opinions on national government in America to-day and opinions Of a century ago are contrasted, it is difficult to be lieve that we are the children of our fathers. Book Description
Excerpt from Constitutional History of the United States Important additions have been made to the original Constitution by way of amendment, but scarcely more so than those which have come to it through the process of the gradual unfolding of its unexpressed meaning, which has naturally followed the expansion of our national domain, the development of our national re sources, the meeting of new responsibilities in govern ment, the contending with new difficulties which have confronted us in the execution of our newly acquired powers. While we have a wmtten, and therefore, in a' certain sense, a settled Constitution, it is an elastic one. Had the original Constitution of 1787 been so limited by its own terms that it could not have been construed to mean more than was actually and clearly expressed by the language in which it was clothed, our Government would soon have gone to wreck or have remained a feeble and insignificant member of the sisterhood of nations, unless by amendment of the old, or by the adoption of a new constitution new power had been given it. Fortunately it was not so framed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Story of the Constitution of the United States The following story is the outcome of a teacher's attempt to present historical lessons of interest to the children, and at the same time be consistent with her all time pleading that in history reading, above all reading, the child should train himself to look for sequence, cause and effect; for initiative acts and results. It ought not to detract from the child's respect for the Constitution to know that it was fought for and fought over; that there was no perfect agreement between parties then any more than now, and that compromises had to be made then as now. This story method has been used with much success in the school-room, and the author feels that it will generally appeal to the average child of our grammar school grade.
