Book Description
Excerpt from The Columbian Exposition and World's Fair Illustrated: Descriptive, Historical, Statistical Was designed by Mr. George P. Post of New York City. It is much the largest building in the Exposition in extent and area. It is 800 feet wide and 1700 feet long. The southerly end of the building faces on the great court directly opposite the Agricultural Hall, and -ou the north end faces the Government Building; on the west side faces the Electricity Building, and on the east Lake Michigan. In form it is rectangular, with an exhibition hall extending about a great interior court. This exhibition hall receives light from both sides and from the top, and each section is composed of a great central arch 100 feet wide, open to the roof, and eighty feet high, with galleries fifty feet wide on either side. Directly in the centre is the great dome, which has a clear open space of 260 feet in diameter, with a surround ing gallery fifty feet wide in addition. The roof of this dome is supported by great arched trusses of iron, and is I7 5 feet high from the floor to the apex of the roof. The galleries are approached upon the main floor by thirty great staircases, the flights of which are twelve feet wide each. There are four great entrances, one in the centre of each facade. These are designed in the manner of triumphal arches, the central archway of each being forty feet wide and eighty feet high. Surmount ing these portals is the great attic story, ornamented with immense sculptured eagles, eighteen feet high, and on each side above the side arches are great panels with inscriptions, and the spandrels are filled with sculptured figures in bas-relief.
