Book Description
Excerpt from The Coast of Bohemia IN one of the old-fashioned books for children there was a story of the adventures of a cent (or perhaps that coin of older lineage, a penny) told by itself, which came into my mind when the publishers sug gested that the readers of a new edition of this book might like to know how it happened to be written. E promptly fancied the book speaking, and taking upon itself the burden of autobiography, which we none of us find very heavy; and no sooner had I done so than I began actually to hear from it in a narrative of much greater distinctness than I could have supplied for it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from In Bohemia Songs That Are Not Sung. Do not praise: a smile is payment more than meet for what is done; Who shall paint the mote's glad raiment floating in the molten sun? Nay, nor smile: for blind is eyesight, ears may hear not, lips are dumb; From the silence, from the twilight, wordless but complete they come. Songs were born before the singer: like white souls awaiting birth, They abide the chosen bringer of their melody to earth. Deep the pain of our demerit: strings so rude or rudely strung, Dull to every pleading spirit seeking speech but sent unsung; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Bohemia's Claim for Freedom T is to be feared that the average educated Englishman knows very little about Bohemia. Very likely he would never have known even that it has no sea-coast if Shakespeare had not inadvertently said that it bad. But the present war is teaching the English what their school masters, for some reason, have never taught them - a little history and geography. And the ancient though fallen kingdom of Bohemia, like the ancient though fallen kingdom of Poland, is likely to play a considerable part in the coming resurrection of the nations. Austria has been to Bohemia, as to Poland, an influence almost more unpardonable than that of the savages of Prussia, not because she did worse, but because she knew better. Austria built, and is still building, her power upon the ruin of Christian countries which have been her own bulwarks against the heathen. As she repaid the rescue by Sobiesky with annexation, and the Crusade of Servia with conspiracy, so she owed her possession of Bohemia to the Moslem victory at Mohacz. Austria has never grudged the blood of her neighbours in defence of her religion. But the Prussianised Austria of to-day is confronted in Bohemia and elsewhere with something which the Prussianised spirit can never understand - the te juvenation of defeat. An English neo-pagan poet said that only one god had ever died: but he might have added that only one has ever risen from the dead. This conception of the birth thatbegins in death is inconceivable to the northern barbarian; and the immortality of the martyred nations bewilders and confounds him. These small Christian States not only survive defeat, but celebrate defeat. They date from defeat; not, like the heathens ab urbe cozzdz'ta, but rather ab arbe capta. The Bohemian song and proverb says, More was lost on Mohacz's field, as the English (perhaps recalling their naval adven tures) say, \vorse things happen at sea. And a modern Servian sculptor is planning a colossal monument for the scene of the Servian ruin at Kosovo. The Prussians have no colossal monu ment upon the field of Jena. Book Description
Excerpt from Bohemia and Other Poems Bohemia And Other Poems. Bohemia. Where shall I go to find real, true Bohemia? Seek it not here, 'mid the glitter of gold; Wealth does not grow on the shores of Bohemia; Fame only lingers its realms to unfold. Who shall I find in the shades of Bohemia? Beings untinged by society's stern laws; Mortals whose aim is unfettered, pure nature, Heedless alike of earth's blame or applause. What shall I see in the land of Bohemia? Noble souls striving for freedom of thought; Wonderful units, with brains ever active, Brimful of hope, yet with cares ever fraught. Who are the natures who haunt true Bohemia? Those whose high souls from society rebel; Those whom the earth-hovering, narrow, vain natures Cannot control, yet they cannot dispel.
