Book Description
Excerpt from The Church Polity of the Pilgrims: A Sermon The martyrs of the primitive churches of old lost more of their blood and lives for their meetings and assemblies than for personal profession of the faith; and so also have others done under the Roman apostasy. It is a usual plea among those who engage in the persecution or punishment of such as differ from them, that if they please they may keep their Opinions, their con sciences, and faith unto themselves, without meetings for com munion or public worship; and herein they suppose they deal friendly and gently with. Them. And this is our present case. Inquiry concerning Evangelical Churches, by John Owen, p. 256, recent edition. Book Description
An excellent primer on the spectrum of ways in which Christians organize their institutional life, Long's study of polity—that is, methods of religious organization—intends to enlighten the reader about the ways in which belief shapes personal and communal function. "Patterns of Polity" is a comparative examination of church governance by bishops, governance by elders, and governance by congregations across contemporary branches of Christianity. "Patterns of Polity" does not defend the validity of any particular polity, but instead raises questions that are essential to all polities and to all communities: How is power created and used? In what ways are polities most likely to function well? In what ways are polities susceptible to corruption and dysfunction? How are conflicts adjudicated and finances handled?

Book Description
Excerpt from The Church Polity of the Pilgrims: The Polity of the New Testament My Dear Sir, - When the articles containing the substance of this little work were first published in "The Congregationalist and Recorder," I read them with much interest, and expressed to you a hope that they might be re-published in a more permanent form. The practical importance of the subject of church government and polity appears to me to be vastly greater than many people seem to suppose. Congregational government is radically different from hierarchy in any of its forms. The former regards the members of a Christian church as capable of managing the affairs of the church: while the latter regards them as incompetent to manage those affairs; not capable of deciding upon the admission, discipline, or expulsion of their fellow-members, nor of maintaining fellowship with other churches. It, therefore, reduces them to the condition of a governed class; their duty being simply to obey the hierarchy, whose competency to govern them is assumed.
