Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ...fairly test one's fitness for China. 5. An acquaintance with that people in this country would give the missionary prestige when he entered upon his work. 6. One fitting for China in this field might succeed in enlisting Chinamen for the main work. 7. It would make the foreign work more real to many at home, to whom it is even yet vague and abstract. The reasons are manifold. The work is timely, and the field is ripe to the harvest. It seems to be a businesslike procedure, and not a mere sentimental scheme. And then, besides, such a determined effort by Protestant Christianity for the Chinaman would shut the mouth of the hoodlum demagogue, politician and press. Our theological seminary in San Francisco is in good shape to receive the stimulus such a scheme would warrant. It is in good condition to carry it out. A CHINESE NOBLEMAN. MBS. DK. MATEER, TUNGCHOW. Sung Foo Wei was born in the Pingtu district, in Shantung. His mother was a woman of good mind and naturally fine character. She was left motherless in her childhood, and thus suffered the greatest calamity that can befall a Chinese girl, viz., ahe had no one to teach her to bind her feet. His father was a small farmer, a man of weak character and addicted to gambling. When Sung Foo Wei was a lad of twelve, the gospel was first preached in bis native village. He and his mother from the first heard it gladly. He soon afterwards entered the boys' boarding-school in Tungchow. His talents and diligence soon raised him to the head of his classes, and his good lessons and good deportment always endeared him to his teachers. When being examined by the session for admission to the church, he was asked what had led him to decide to serve Jesus. His reply was because Jesus had loved him so much...

Book Description
John Knox (1514-1572) was more a reformer of the Scottish Kirk than he was a systematic theologian, as his collected works will attest. Knox had a profound influence upon theological and ecclesiological developments in Scotland both purely by the force of his personality and by the role he played in shaping the Scots Confession and the Book of Common Order. Knox was an ordained priest and served as a tutor prior to his conversion to Protestantism. Volumes One and Two: Knox's famous 'History of the Reformation in Scotland'. Apologetics as much as history, 'History of the Reformation in Scotland' was immediately seized and suppressed when it initially appeared, yet it has remained available in various editions for over 400 years. Volume Three: 'Earliest Writings', 1548-1554 Volume Four: 'Writings from Frankfurt and Geneva'. These writings in exile include Knox's famous 'First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women', his violent diatribe against Mary of Guise. Volume Five: 'On Predestination' and other writings. 'On Predestination, in Answer to the Cavillations by an Anabaptist' is Knox's longest theological work and presents a position of rigid predestinationism. Volume Six: Letters, Prayer, and other shorter writings with a sketch of his life.
