Book Description
Excerpt from Chronicles of England: A Metrical History A celebrated French writer has said, Rhyme was probably invented to assist the memory, as well as to regulate the song and the dance. The return of the same sounds served to bring easily and readily to the recollection the intermediate words between the two rhymes and by way of example he relates A rabbi, who gave me a general View of the Hebrew language, which I was never able to learn, once recited to me a number of rhymed psalms, of which I caught up two. Book Description
Excerpt from A Collection of the Chronicles and Ancient Histories of Great Britain, Now Called England, Vol. 1 During the nine years which elapsed between and seems to have been engaged in collecting and digesting the memorials for his chronicle, which comprises the earliest period of the annals of Britain, and even begins with a period anterior to the time of acknowledged English history; continuing it to the death of King Henry the Fourth. This portion of his chronicle, comprised in four volumes, he completed about the year and soon after the accession of King Edward the Fourth he added a fifth volume, carried down to the time when Monstre let's chronicle terminates. Thenceforward he continued writing and collecting new materials until 1471, when his own chronicle ends: in this, or the following year, he appears to have issued his sixth volume. From that time to his death he was engaged in the revision of the last volume, the most important of his labours, and in collecting new and more authentic information upon English affairs during the period which he had already there treated of. Book Description
Excerpt from Chronicles of London: Edited With Introduction and Notes From the beginning at least Of the fifteenth century aldermen and citizens of London had shown their interest in civic and general history by compiling, or encouraging others to compile, English Chronicles arranged under the years of the municipality. The Chronicles of London, which, as we now know them, thus came into being, can, however, trace their ancestry much further back. Early in the growth of municipal life there must have arisen the desire for a readily accessible record, giving at least the succession of city Officers. To the record thus established it was natural to add year by year notices, whether of landmarks in the history of the City, or of some great event which had made the year in question memorable 1.
