Book Description
Description: Lesslie Newbigin (1909-1998) was one of the seminal theologians of mission in the twentieth century, and perhaps the most important in the English-speaking world. His thinking was anchored in the practice of mission: he was a missionary in India, a bishop of the Indian church, and a leader in emerging international mission structures. In his late years, he pioneered research on how the gospel could engage with Western culture. For many he is the founding father of the missional church movement. This book is the first to address the crucial role Newbigin played in shaping ecumenical thinking on mission during the twentieth century, filling an important gap in our knowledge of the development of twentieth-century missional theology. It does so by seeking to answer a central question in Newbigin's thinking: How does ""mission"" relate to ""church""? Taking the integration of the International Missionary Council with the World Council of Churches as its central focus, this book provides a unique history of crucial events in the ecumenical movement. But more importantly, through a study of Newbigin's role in the theological debate, this book demonstrates how missional theology evolved during the postwar period when there was a ""sea change"" in understandings both of mission and church. Endorsements: ""Mark Laing's work makes an important contribution to scholarship, not simply on Newbigin, but more broadly to understanding the development of both ecumenical and evangelical theologies of mission during the twentieth century."" --Brian Stanley Professor of World Christianity, University of Edinburgh ""Mark Laing's study on Newbigin's decisive role during the most creative, but also critical, period in the recent history of the WCC is a major contribution to a detailed knowledge of developments and debates that bear a lasting influence on present theologies, memories, structures, as well as conflicts . . . I consider this book a 'must' for theologians and leaders in mission and church. --Jacques Matthey Former Director of WCC Commission on World Mission and Evangelism ""This is a book that goes to the heart of the relationship of church and mission among Protestant Christians. Newbigin has attracted much attention in recent years and will attract more, but there is, to my knowledge, no equivalent of this work currently available. It is much needed."" --Andrew F. Walls Honorary Professor in the University of Edinburgh ""This is a pioneering study of a neglected aspect of Newbigin's work. Dr. Mark Laing provides a balanced, reliable, and insightful evaluation of Newbigin's role and contribution."" --Wilbert R. Shenk Senior Professor, Mission History and Contemporary Culture Fuller Graduate School of Intercultural Studies About the Contributor(s): Mark T. B. Laing taught missiology at Union Biblical Seminary, Pune, India, for several years, where he also coordinated the Centre for Mission Studies. This book is a revised form of his PhD thesis, which he recently completed at the University of Edinburgh.

Book Description
This work is a biblical masterpiece on Romans 6:5, “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.” Brinsley sets into view the Christian’s union and communion with, and conformity to, Jesus Christ. He shows that it is a union, communion and conformity applied to the believer in Christ’s death and resurrection. Believers are “planted together” with Christ in a mystical implantation; they are converted by faith in Him, have unity in Him, have a blessed communion in Him, while at the same time being nourished, show forth growth, bear fruit, and have sustenance through Christ’s Spirit. After establishing the union, communion and conformity believers have in Christ, he teaches how Christ’s death and resurrection apply to believers as they are grafted into the life-giving Root of the Savior. He covers how believers die to sin, what it means to mortify sin, and how to live in righteousness through the power of the resurrecting Spirit of Christ. Such a resurrection is not only first in this life through regeneration, but also the hope which Christians have in the blessed return of the Savior who will resurrect them ultimately in glory hereafter. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Description
Foreword Review's Annual INDIEFAB Book of the Year Finalist How do we explain human consciousness? Where do we get our sense of beauty? Why do we recoil at suffering? Why do we have moral codes that none of us can meet? Why do we yearn for justice, yet seem incapable of establishing it? Any philosophy or worldview must make sense of the world as we actually experience it. We need to explain how we can discern qualities such as beauty and evil and account for our practices of morality and law. The complexity of the contemporary world is sometimes seen as an embarrassment for Christianity. But law professor David Skeel makes a fresh case for the plausibility and explanatory power of Christianity. The Christian faith offers plausible explanations for the central puzzles of our existence, such as our capacity for idea-making, our experience of beauty and suffering, and our inability to create a just social order. When compared with materialism or other sets of beliefs, Christianity provides a more comprehensive framework for understanding human life as we actually live it. We need not deny the complexities of life as we experience it. But the paradoxes of our existence can lead us to the possibility that the existence of God could make sense of it all.
