Comparative anatomy of the vertebrate head was taken a great step forward about a hundred years ago when the Born method of reconstruction - using wax plates - was applied to examination of chondrocrania. Thus, a highly detailed and very exact description became possible. Enthusiastically taken up by many, Gaupp with his work on Lacerta (1900) was the first to apply it. Regrettably, efforts were not concentrated on a few, clear systematic groups, but were spread rather widely over forms ranging from easily available domestic species, e.g. Oryctolagus (Voit 1909) to rare exotic species such as Tachyglossus (Gaupp 1908) and Ornithorhynchus (Wilson 1901). Furthermore, the research remained relatively static in its considerations, and until very recently a chon drocranium was treated as complete in its development in the same way that a fully developed skull is complete and in its form specific for a species or genus. The stadium optimum had to be abandoned as an idealized fiction giving way to the concept of a dynamically progressing ontogeny.

Morphogeny of the nasal skull was investigated in 92 embryos of 13 species of Cetacea. Compared to the original nasal capsule of land mammals, the nasal structures of Cetacea show many weighty transformations. As a result, the nostrils are translocated from the tip of the snout to the vertex of the head. Several structures of the embryonic nasal skull remain preserved even in adult cetaceans. The translocation of the nostrils to the highest point of the surfacing body is among the most perfect adaptations of cetaceans to the aquatic life habits. The morphogeny of the nasal skull suggests that all cetaceans are of common origin and form a single monophyletic order. The hitherto usual division of this order into two suborders, Mysticeti and Odontoceti, appears to be unsubstantiated. This book gives a survey of the architecture of the Golgi apparatus, as revealed by morphological and cytochemical studies with a variety of cell types. The results presented include demonstrations of Golgi architecture in the course of cell differentiation, at varying functional cellular states, and under the influence of microtubule-disrupting agents. Emphasis is particularly placed on the organization of subsections of the Golgi apparatus and the questions of how Golgi subsections may be related to functional subcompartments of the Golgi system. By means of affinity-cytochemical approaches, using a palette of lectins of diverse sugar specificities, it is shown that functional subcompartments can be distributed in the complex Golgi system irrespective of the morphological subdivision in cis-medial-trans-transmost subsections. The use of pre- and post-embedment lectin-cytochemical approaches as a tool for the localization of functional Golgi subcompartments is of particular interest, especially as some of the lectins have been used in these approaches for the first time. This book intends to provide synoptic information on the architecture of the Golgi apparatus, its wide variability and possible arrangements of Golgi subcompartments.
