Book Description
A groundbreaking collection of essays on a hitherto underexplored subject that challenges the existing stereotypical views of the trivial and innocent nature of children's culture, this work reveals for the first time the artistic and complex interactions among children. Based on research of scholars from such diverse fields as American studies, anthropology, education, folklore, psychology, and sociology, this volume represents a radical new attempt to redefine and reinterpret the expressive behaviors of children. The book is divided into four major sections: history, methodology, genres, and setting, with a concluding chapter on theory. Each section is introduced by an overview by Brian Sutton-Smith. The accompanying bibliography lists historical references through the present, representing works by scholars for over 100 years.

Book Description
Children have their own games, stories, riddles, and so forth. This book gives students and general readers an introduction to children's folklore. Included are chapters on the definition and classification of children's folklore, the presence of children's folklore in literature and popular culture, and the scholarly interpretation of children's folklore. The volume also includes a wide range of examples and texts demonstrating the variety of children's folklore around the world. Children have always had their own games, stories, riddles, jokes, and so forth. Many times, children's folklore differs significantly from the folklore of the adult world, as it reflects the particular concerns and experiences of childhood. In the late 19th century, children's folklore began receiving growing amounts of scholarly attention, and it is now one of the most popular topics among folklorists, general readers, and students. This book is a convenient and authoritative introduction to children's folklore for nonspecialists. The volume begins with a discussion of how children's folklore is defined, and how various types of children's folklore are classified. This is followed by a generous selection of examples and texts illustrating the variety of children's folklore from around the world. The book then looks at how scholars have responded to children's folklore since the 19th century, and how children's folklore has become prominent in popular culture. A glossary and bibliography round out the volume.

Book Description
A haunting story of magic and myth, of one boy caught between worlds, and of the lengths he will travel to save those he loves. "Dark, magical, and mysterious, Bone Jack captured me and carried me away." —Rebecca Stead, Newbery Medal-winning author of When You Reach Me and Goodbye Stranger Times have been tough for Ash lately, and all he wants is for everything to go back to the way it used to be. Back before drought ruined the land and disease killed off the livestock. Before Ash’s father went off to war and returned carrying psychological scars. Before his best friend, Mark, started acting strangely. As Ash trains for his town’s annual Stag Chase—a race rooted in violent, ancient lore—he’s certain that if he can win and make his father proud, life will return to normal. But the line between reality and illusion is rapidly blurring, and the past has a way of threatening the present. When a run in the mountains brings Ash face-to-face with Bone Jack—a figure that guards the boundary between the living world and the dead—everything changes once more. As dark energies take root and the world as he knows it is upended, it’s up to Ash to restore things to their proper order and literally run for his life. Praise for Bone Jack: A 2015 Carnegie Medal nominee A 2015 Branford Boase Award nominee "Though this might seem like justanother ghost story, there’s subtle depth here, too, and teen fans of both horror and literary fiction will findlots to like." —Booklist "Crowe is a masterly storyteller whose lyrical prose will enthrall young readers. A page-turning and atmospheric offering for middle graders who crave dark fantasy." —School Library Journal "Crowe is particularly effective in evoking the sensory elements of the natural world...eminiscent of David Almond’s work in its sensuality and mysticism." —Horn Book "British author Crowe crafts a tense, atmospheric tale steeped in folklore, where the setting itself comes alive. It’s a quick but memorable read, and a fascinating take on the power of belief and healing." —Publishers Weekly "The action scenes around the chase itself are gripping, with lots of high drama and no guaranteed happy outcome. What’s even more memorable, however, is the lingering feeling of loss that shapes so many lives in this British import; plenty of real-life monsters like war, depression, and isolation haunt people as much as ghostly hound boys." —BCCB "[P]owerful and beguiling." —Telegraph "A lovely, eerie adventure, balancing the ancient magic with Ash's very real character growth." —Kirkus Reviews

Book Description
Sometimes old memories come fl ooding back into one's mind with nostalgic eff ect. One day my brain felt like a giant elephant as I hummed old songs and rhymes that dated as far back as my days in nursery school. My native country Tanzania was preoccupying me. I felt the urge to share these wonderful childhood memories. It was time to show my gratitude to all my teachers who made my school days a joy to remember and also to share the gift of memory with all the children in this universe. Th is book consists of nursery rhymes, songs and 20 Swahili folk tales translated into English. Th e stories were written and submitted by school children from Manundu Primary School in my hometown Korogwe. In Tanzania, oral lore is a common tradition of transmitting stories from one generation to another. I did not wish to see this knowledge get lost but get preserved in a form of written book. Th e nursery rhymes, songs and animal facts were contributed by me. Th ese were inspired by memories from my school time experiences and also a wish to instill children with an appreciation for the wild animals, especially those belonging to the List of Th reatened Animals. For every child who wishes to explore their wild and fun side, just fl ick through the pages of this book and get acquainted with the Swahili folklore and Tanzanian wildlife. Tanzania warmly welcomes you. "Karibu sana!"
