However, few may be aware of the role this region played, and continues to play, in the unfolding story of the rocks at our feet. The science of "soft rock" geology emerged in the nineteenth century when it became widely known that sedimentary rocks are the result of erosion, transport and deposition of ancient sediment, often by water.
